Objective: Tooth extraction in oral surgery may cause complications such as bleeding. A ttannin is an astringent group that can accelerate the process of bleeding cessation by precipitating the blood protein, specifically thrombin. One of the plants containing tannin is brown algae. The total tannin level in brown algae, specifically Sargassum sp. and Padina sp., will be determined.Material and Methods: This research is an experimental research using post-test only with control group design. The seaweed used in this study was taken from the waters of Punaga, Takalar. The dried seaweed was subsequently extracted using maceration. Extracts were diluted using ethanol and. then was reacted with 7.5% Folin and 1% NaOH. The measurement of tannin level was performed using a standard curve of tannic acid.Results: Total tannin level of Sargassum sp. was 0.5152 ± 0.9634 %, while the total tannin level of Padina sp. was 1.1321 ± 0.09747 %.Conclusion: Padina sp. has a higher total tannin level than Sargassum sp.
Background Bone grafting is an important surgical procedure to reconstruct alveolar bone defects in patients with cleft lip and palate. Polyphosphate (PolyP) is a physiological polymer present in the blood, primarily in platelets. PolyP plays a role as a phosphate source in bone calcium phosphate deposition. Moreover, the cleavage of high-energy bonds to release phosphates provides local energy necessary for regenerative processes. In this study, polyP is complexed with calcium to form Calcium polyP microparticles (Ca-polyP MPs), which were shown to have osteoinductive properties in preclinical studies. The aim of this study was to evaluate the feasibility, safety, and osteoinductivity of Ca-polyP MPs, alone or in combination with BCP, in a first-in-human clinical trial. Methods This single-blinded, parallel, prospective clinical pilot study enrolled eight adolescent patients (mean age 18.1: range 13–34 years) with residual alveolar bone cleft. Randomization in two groups (four receiving Ca-polyP MPs only, four a combination of Ca-polyP MPs and biphasic calcium phosphate (BCP)) was performed. Patient follow-up was 6 months. Outcome parameters included safety parameters and close monitoring of possible adverse effects using radiographic imaging, regular blood tests, and physical examinations. Osteoinductivity evaluation using histomorphometric analysis of biopsies was not possible due to COVID restrictions. Results Due to surgical and feasibility reasons, eventually, only 2 patients received Ca-polyP MPs, and the others the combination graft. All patients were assessed up to day 90. Four out of eight were able to continue with the final assessment day (day 180). Three out of eight were unable to reach the hospital due to COVID-19 restrictions. One patient decided not to continue with the study. None of the patients showed any allergic reactions or any remarkable local or systematic side effects. Radiographically, patients receiving Ca-polyP MPs only were scored grade IV Bergland scale, while patients who got the BCP/Ca-polyP MPs combination had scores ranging from I to III. Conclusions Our results indicate that Ca-polyP MPs and the BCP/Ca-polyP MPs combination appear to be safe graft materials; however, in the current setting, Ca-polyP MPs alone may not be a sufficiently stable defect-filling scaffold to be used in alveolar cleft repair. <p>Squamous Cell Carcinoma (SCC) is common is a malignant neoplasma originated from epithelial cells. It is usually involving the oral mucosa and underlying tissue of the tongue, hypopharynx, and also larynx. This report discussed about the management of SCC at tongue with hemiglosectomy and selective neck dissection managed in a male, 57 years old who referred with chief complaints of a mass on the tongue measuring 0.5cm that did not heal, Incision biopsy result confirms a squamous cell carcinoma with well differentiated on his tongue with enlarged lymph nodes level I ipsilateral. The patient was hospitalized and hemiglosectomy surgery with selective neck dissection was conducted, with the entire edge of the excision boundary has been free of tumor mass. Hemiglosectomy with selective neck dissection is selected depending on the size of the lesion, location of lesion and metastases occurrence.</p>
Background: Trauma and injury to teeth and their supporting tissues often occur in cases of oromaxillofacial trauma. Oromaxillofacial trauma is found in 15% of all emergencies, with dentoalveolar trauma involvement in 2% of these cases. Objective: Management of dentoalveolar fractures with minor head injuries. Case: A 53-year-old man, traumatized by a single motorcycle accident and hit by a wooden board with his face hit first. The patient was unconscious shortly after the accident, then complained of pain in the lower lip and gums, teeth 11, 21 avulsed, 12, 22, 31, 21, 41, 42 mobile, and headache. Management: The inspection and handling of the airway was not carried out because it had been previously handled at Puskesmas. The patient was consulted on the Neurosurgery Department for a history of loss of consciousness, then under general anesthesia, definitive care was performed by attaching the eyelet splint to fix the anterior maxillary teeth, and fixation with Erich arch bar for the lower anterior teeth. Conclusion: Interdental wiring is an intraoperative fixation technique for dentoalveolar trauma, accompanied by eyelet splint and Erich arch bar. Patients with head trauma should be consulted to a neurosurgeon before definitive measures are taken.
