Background: Episiotomy is a deliberate incision made on the perineum and posterior vaginal wall during vaginal delivery. Mothers that have a new baby are in great need for wound care and pain relief. We assessed and compared pain intensity and sexual satisfaction using cyanoacrylate adhesive glue and vicryl for episiotomy skin closure at AKTH, Kano Nigeria. Methods: A randomised control trial was conducted among 100 women who had spontaneous vaginal delivery in the labour ward of AKTH from June to October 2019 after randomization into study group I and control group II. Cyanoacrylate and vicryl were used for skin closure following episiotomy and the patients were followed up for pain and sexual satisfaction for 14 days. Data were analysed using SPSS version 21.0 and p<0.05 was set statistically significant. Results: The mean±SD ages of the women in the study and control groups were 22.71±9.14 and 23.66±9.00 years, respectively. In group I 84% perceived no pain and 72% perceived mild pain in group II during cyanoacrylate adhesive glue procedures. At all-time intervals, pain intensity was lower in group I (p<0.05). A significant difference was observed regarding sexual function between group I and group II (p<0.001) but the difference was not significant in other cases. Conclusions: Cyanoacrylate glue compared to Vicryl was found to be effective in reducing short-term pain, the need for analgesia and better sexual satisfaction following episiotomy after childbirth.
Quality education cannot be guaranteed in the absence of adequate and wellmanaged educational facilities. However, Nigerian public universities face numerous challenges in terms of school plant management. This paper examines school plant management in public universities in Nigeria: challenges and way forward. Secondary data were sourced online to buttress points raised in this paper. The paper identified the following as some of the challenges facing school plant management in public universities in Nigeria: poor attitude of staff and students toward maintenance of school facilities, pressure on school facilities due to over-enrolment of students, inadequate funding of public universities, among others. Strategic policies to foster positive attitudes among staff and students in order to instil the habit of ownership mentality among staff and students in all educational institutions with regard to school plant management, expansion of school facilities, increased educational funding, and so on were among the suggestions made as to the way forward.
This study investigated the role of religious institutions in enhancing secondary school security in Sokoto Metropolis, Sokoto State, Nigeria. Two research objectives were formulated to guide the study: to assess the role of religious institutions in enhancing secondary school security and to also examine the constraints to the role of religious institutions in enhancing secondary school security in Sokoto Metropolis, Sokoto State, Nigeria. The study was motivated by the increasing cases of insecurity in the education sector and the need to find a lasting solution by all stakeholders, including religious institutions. Qualitative research method was adopted for the study and interview was used in collecting data. The population of the study comprises school administrators, religious Subjects’ teachers and religious leaders, where nine participants were selected using snowball sampling technique. The data were analysed using thematic analysis and the findings revealed that religious institutions play a spiritual supportive role, advisory role in government and private owned schools and play a huge and direct role in schools owned by them by purchasing of security gadgets, construction of school fence, liaising with security agents, among others. It was also revealed that among the constraints in enhancing secondary school security are: financial, political, legal, among others. Based on these findings, the study concludes that religious institutions play a great role in enhancing secondary school security in schools owned by them but play a supportive and advisory role in other schools due to some constraints and therefore recommends that government should provide constitutional framework to support religious institutions in order to enable them carry out some roles in enhancing security of schools and that of the society in general.
Educational institutions globally have suffered setback as a result of the COVID 19 pandemic which led to closure of schools for almost a year. This paper examined classroom crisis in higher institutions of learning under the new normal: administrative coping strategies. Secondary data were used to support the points raised in the paper. The data were sourced from print materials and online publications by recognized institutions and individual authors. The paper identified difficulty in the coverage of syllabus, poor knowledge of information and communication technology (ICT), cancelations of conferences, poor network service, inadequate ICT facilities, expensive data coupled with economic hardship, difficulty in social distance observation, pressure from school management, high rate of drop out and increased in workload as challenges facing higher educational institutions under the new normal. It was also identified that online academic activities, blended learning approach, arrangement of extra classes, running of parallel session and adjustment of academic calendar are some of the administrative strategies employed by schools. It was suggested that schools should provide ICT training for both staff and students, provide adequate ICT facilities, ensure stable electricity supply, amongst others.
