There are many established registries of kidney biopsies around the world. In addition, there are several reports available in literature from many countries on pediatric kidney biopsy. This study was done to determine the indications and pathological patterns of kidney biopsies of children referred to our hospital, and compare our data with the data available from other countries. This is a cross-sectional study of pediatric kidney biopsies over a 10-year period, from January 1997 to December 2006. All biopsies were done in Aga Khan University Hospital, Karachi, Pakistan. Age range was from 1 to 14 years. Data were analyzed for indications and histopathological diagnosis. A total of 54 kidney biopsies were included in the initial analysis. Here 13 samples were excluded and final analysis was done on the remaining 41 samples. The most common indication of kidney biopsy was nephrotic syndrome in 25 samples (61%). The most common histopathology was minimal change disease in 15 (37%), followed by focal segmental glomerulosclerosis in 5 (12%) of the biopsies.
Background: Purpose of our study was to find out correlation between estimated Glomerular Filtration Rate (GFR) by Modification of Diet in Renal Disease (MDRD) formula and Glomerular Filtration Rate by Cockcroft-Gault equations, in patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD), and to see whether they can be used interchangeably. Methods: We conducted a cross section study of 70 patients presented to the nephrology clinic over a period of one year. We compared the Glomerular Filtration Rate by these two formulas in five stages of Chronic Kidney Disease.
Background: Kidney biopsy is one of the most important tools in the assessment of kidney disease. Knowing the histopathology is important for immediate clinical management. It helps in predicting the long term prognosis and in planning for prevention of chronic kidney disease. Methods: This is a cross section study of percutaneus biopsies of the native kidneys of patients, who presented to the Aga Khan University Hospital Karachi Pakistan, over ten year period from 2003 to 2012. Age range was 16 to 77 years. Results: Total number of 435 biopsies were included in the study. The most common histopathological findings, regardless of the indication of biopsy were Tubulo Interstitial Nephritis in 15 percent, followed by Membranous Nephropathy in 12 percent, Focal Segmental Glomerulosclerosis in 8 percent and Membrano Proliferative Glomerulonephritis also in 8 percent. Conclusion: This study will help in better understanding the spectrum of renal disease in Pakistan. It will guide the clinician in the management and provide a data base or a starting point for the researchers for conducting the controlled and population base studies.
