Introduction. Youth is a decisive age to shape the direction of their life and that of their family. However, due to the host of biological, social, and economic factors, adolescent females can be at high risk of adverse sexual and reproductive health outcomes. Therefore, assessing youth reproductive service utilization and associated factors among female night students is very crucial for timely intervention to their gaps. Method. An institutional-based cross-sectional study design was conducted in Amhara region among 2,050 female night students from September 15 to November 15, 2018. A self-administered pretested questionnaire was used to collect the data. Bivariate and multivariable logistic regression models were used. Odds ratio with 95% confidence interval was computed to determine the strength of association between predictor and outcome variables. P value less than or equal to 0.05 is considered as the level of significance. Results. Out of the total respondents, about 54.6%(CI: 52.5%-56.8%) of them utilized reproductive health services. Respondents who were attending secondary education ( AOR = 2.55 , 95 % CI = 1.97 ‐ 5.62 ), attitude towards youth reproductive health services ( AOR = 2.74 , 95 % CI = 2.07 ‐ 5.30 ), those who had a habit of communicating on sexual and reproductive health issues with their family ( AOR = 3.66 , 95 % CI = 3.59 ‐ 7.41 ), discussion on sexual and reproductive health issue with peers/friends ( AOR = 1.43 , 95 % CI = 1.01 ‐ 2.02 ), respondents with good knowledge on youth reproductive health services ( AOR = 2.03 , 95 % CI = 1.49 ‐ 2.75 ), and those who had faced reproductive health problems ( AOR = 2.03 , 95 % CI = 1.49 ‐ 2.75 ) were significantly associated with youth reproductive health service utilization. Conclusion. Youth reproductive health service utilization among female night students was not satisfactory. Therefore, special focus should be given to female night students by providing accessible, acceptable, confidential, flexible, and friendly reproductive health service utilization. Finally, community health promotion and education are mandatory to promote the practice of discussing youth reproductive health issues with their children.
Background. Gender-based violence (GBV) is a major public health issue that affects the health and well-being of millions of young people worldwide each year. Gender-based violence was prevalent throughout Sub-Saharan Africa. However, research in Africa is extremely diverse. Objective. The purpose of this study is to determine the extent and risk factors of gender-based violence among night female students in Bahir Dar, Ethiopia. Methods. This cross-sectional study was conducted among 788 elementary and high school night female students in Bahir Dar from October 15 to November 15, 2019. Data was gathered using self-administered questionnaires. A binary and multiple logistic regression model was used to identify factors associated with gender-based and sexual violence. An adjusted odds ratio (AOR) with a 95 percent confidence interval (CI) was calculated to determine the level of significance. Results. The overall lifetime prevalence of gender-based violence (sexual, physical, and emotional violence) was 71.1% with a 95% CI of 67.8%-74.1%. The lifetime prevalence of sexual violence, physical violence, and emotional violence was 49.1%, 57.5%, and 41.6%, respectively. Rural childhood residence (AOR: 3.37, 95% CI: (2.17-5.54)), low school performance (AOR: 3.44, 95% CI: (2.13-5.56)), lack of sexual and reproductive health conversation experience (AOR: 3.68, 95% CI: (2.07-6.54)), poor family control (AOR: 5.62, 95% CI: (3.25-9.71)), and being sexually active (AOR: 3.79, 95% CI: (2.35-6.12)) increased significantly the risk of gender-based violence. The risk factors for sexual violence were young people living with both parents (AOR: 0.28, 95% CI: (0.19-0.41)), peer pressure (AOR: 5.73, 95% CI: (4.11-7.98)), and family support (AOR: 0.31, 95% CI: (0.22-0.43)). Conclusion. In the study area, the lifetime prevalence of sexual violence, physical violence, and emotional violence was high. As a result, it is recommended that policymakers, district officials, schools, and other stakeholders pay attention to and act on gender-based values.
Background Young is a key stage in rapid biological and psychosocial changes affecting every aspect of the lives and an important time to set the foundation for good health in adulthood. Adolescent-parent communication is a potential path for improving sexual and reproductive health outcomes for adolescents, most of parents did not teach their adolescents about sexual and reproductive health. Even though, some researches have been done on day time students, there is no study conducted focusing on young girls attending night school in Ethiopia. Objective This study aimed to assess young-parent communication on sexual and reproductive health issues and associated factors among night female students in Amhara Region, Ethiopia, 2018. Method School based quantitative cross-sectional study was employed in Amhara region among 1640 young female night students from September 15 to November 15/2018. Face-to-face interview-administered questionnaires were used to collect the data. Bi-variable and multi-variable logistic regression model were used. Odds ratio (OR) with 95% confidence interval (CI) were computed to determine the strength of association between predictor and outcome variables. P-values less than 0.05 considered as level of significance. Results One hundred ten (37.5%) of the students had communication with their parents on at least two issues of sexual and reproductive health (SRH) issues in the last 6 months. Grade level (adjusted odd ratio (AOR) = 2.61, 95% CI (2.04, 3.34)), marital status (AOR = 1.29, 95% CI (1.03, 1.63), living arrangement (AOR = 1.50(1.13, 2.00)), utilization of youth friendly sexual and reproductive health services (AOR = 1.80, 95% CI (1.41, 2.30)), students ever had sexual intercourse (AOR = 1.50, 95% CI (1.23, 1.96)), Information about sexual and reproductive health services (AOR = 1.45(1.16, 1.80)) were associated young-parents communication on sexual and reproductive health issues. Conclusion In this study young-parent communications on sexual and reproductive health (SRH) issues was found to be limited. Therefore, teachers, health extension workers, and health professionals should strengthen comprehensive SRH education for students in school, churches, mosques, health facilities and encouraging them to participate in different health clubs in school. Parent should give education for their children sexual and reproductive health during the era of young age.
Background Intrauterine contraceptive device is a highly effective, long-acting, reversible family planning method that is safe to use by most postpartum women including those who are breastfeeding. Family planning methods used mainly, the postpartum intrauterine contraceptive device can tackle unintended pregnancy, short birth intervals, and pregnancy-related maternal death. Knowledge and attitude about the postpartum intrauterine contraceptive device were significant predictors of subsequent method use. However, the magnitude, Knowledge, and attitude toward intrauterine contraceptive device is still low in Ethiopia. Nevertheless, limited studies were done to assess Knowledge and attitude toward the postpartum intrauterine contraceptive device and their associated factors. Therefore, this study aimed to assess Knowledge, Attitudes, and associated factors toward postpartum intrauterine contraceptive devices. Objective This study aimed to assess Knowledge, Attitudes, and associated factors toward postpartum intrauterine contraceptive devices among pregnant women attending antenatal care at Debre tabor town public health institutions Northwest Ethiopia, 2021. Methods an institutional-based cross-sectional study was conducted from March 1- April–30/2021. Four hundred twenty-three participants were recruited by using a systematic random sampling technique. The data were collected through face-to-face interviews using a pretested and structured questionnaire. Multivariable logistic regression analyses were computed to identify factors associated with the outcome variable. An adjusted odds ratio with a 95% confidence interval was computed to determine the level of significance. Results Knowledge and attitude towards postpartum intrauterine contraceptive devices were found to be 36 and 48.7% respectively. Government employee (AOR = 4.98,95%CI:2.79–8.91), student (AOR = 5.29,95%CI:1.29–21.80), urban residence (AOR = 1.9095%CI: 1.02–3.53) and ever discussed on a postpartum intrauterine contraceptive device with health care provider (AOR = 6.01,95%CI:3.70–.7.44) were associated with the knowledge about the postpartum intrauterine contraceptive device. Attained secondary education (AOR = 3.22, 95%CI: 1.41–7.31), attended college and above education (AOR = 3.62, 95%CI: 1.75–7.51), government-employee (AOR = 2.76, 95CI:1.11–6.81), student (AOR = 32.10, 95%CI: 3.22–44.79), good knowledge,(AOR = 13.72, 95%CI: 6.63–28.42), ever discussed on a postpartum intrauterine contraceptive device with health care provider (AOR = 2.24,95CI:1.18–4.24), were associated with attitude toward postpartum intrauterine contraceptive device. Conclusion and recommendation knowledge and positive attitude toward postpartum intrauterine contraceptive devices were low as compared with other studies. Mothers’ employment status, residence, and discussions about a postpartum intrauterine contraceptive device with healthcare providers improve women’s knowledge about the postpartum intrauterine contraceptive device. Maternal educational status, occupational status, ever discussed postpartum intrauterine contraceptive devices with a health care provider and several antenatal cares follow up were improves women’s attitude towards the postpartum intrauterine contraceptive device. The finding highlights the importance of discussing postpartum intrauterine contraceptive devices during pregnancy, which in turn enhances the knowledge and attitude, of mothers about postpartum intrauterine contraceptive devices.
