ABSTRACT. Odontogenic myxofibroma of the temporomandibular joint (TMJ) is a rare tumour; moreover, primary splenic angiosarcoma (PAS) in paediatric patients is extremely rare. We report on a 15-year-old boy who presented with right TMJ swelling and subsequently developed epigastric and right upper quadrant pain. The TMJ swelling proved to be odontogenic myxofibroma and the abdominal pain was a result of primary splenic angiosarcoma with hepatic metastasis. We report for the first time the synchronous presentation of PAS and odontogenic myxofibroma in a paediatric patient, and we describe the radiological features along with the histological diagnosis and clinical outcome. Uptake in 18 F-2-fluoro-2-deoxy-D-glucose positron emission tomography is also described for the first time for both these tumours.
Pulmonary alveolar microlithiasis is a rare autosomal recessive condition that is characterized by the formation of excessive calcium phosphate microliths in the alveoli. Most patients are diagnosed in adulthood due to the slow progression of the disease. Children with this disease are asymptomatic, and changes in the lung parenchyma are usually discovered incidentally. The diagnosis is made by the combination of a positive chest imaging and histological examination. Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is a chronic systemic autoimmune disease characterized by chronic seropositive symmetrical inflammatory polyarthritis with numerous extra-articular manifestations. It targets the lining of the synovial membranes, frequently affects females more than males, and is treated with the disease-modifying antirheumatic drugs (DMARDs). If left untreated, it leads to increased morbidity, mortality, and socioeconomic burdens. In this case, we report a 19-year-old young man who presented with clinical and radiographic features of PAM associated with RA.
Fibromyalgia is a common syndrome (FM) that is prevalent all over the world with different prevalence rates in each country. The etiology and pathogenesis of fibromyalgia are still unknown, unclear, and with uncertain pathophysiology. Diagnosis of fibromyalgia is not that easy because the disease is described as multifactorial, and very little information is known about the causes of the disease. Treatment of fibromyalgia is not totally curative; treatment aims to improve and alleviate the symptoms as easing pain, improving sleep, develop the physical function. The main problem with fibromyalgia is not only difficulty of diagnosis or poor prognosis, but also the treatment is not adequate or satisfactory, so it is of great importance to educate the patients about their illness and giving them advice on how to limit the risk factors that aggravate the case, besides educating patients to use non-pharmacological strategies for better management.
scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
