The changes in oxidative markers evident in a significant number of patients may be associated with oxidative stress, which may, in turn, have caused sudden sensorineural hearing loss in those patients.
Nasal packing causes more discomfort and pain than transseptal suturing, while there was no significant difference in olfactory functions or the mucociliary clearance after septoplasty between nasal packing and transseptal suturing.
SAR is a disorder that elevates systemic oxidative stress and reduces antioxidant enzyme activities. Our results shed light on the etiopathogenesis of the disease and can help develop new therapeutic approaches.
According to the findings of our study, MF is superior to montelukast in improving olfactory function. Although montelukast has been shown to be effective against AR symptoms, its effect on olfactory function was not demonstrated in this study.
Olfactory function improved during fasting and declined during satiation. The olfactory system is more sensitive, and more reactive to odours, under starvation conditions, and is characterised by reduced activity during satiation. This situation was more pronounced in patients with a better sense of smell. Olfaction-related neurotransmitters should be the target of further study.
Two patients with septal perforation were operated on by the open technique approach, while the other five were operated on by the endonasal approach. Grafts taken from conchal or septal cartilage were used during the repair of septal perforation. For the repair of perforation, pedunculated flaps were rotated from both sides of the nasal mucosa. In the postoperative period, surgical success were evaluated by nasal endoscopy.
Results:The operation was not successful for two patients with large septal perforation. Perforation was successfully repaired in five patients with small and medium septal perforations.
Conclusion:The most important factors affecting the success of septal perforation repair are the ability and experience of the surgeon, the amount of tissue in the remaider of the septum, the size and the localization of septal perforation. For the success of the treatment, it is important to use the most suitable surgical technique according to the properties of the perforation. (JAREM 2013; 3: 28-30)
