Riebesell-Hamburg: Biometrik und Variationsstatistik.Die beiden Abhandlungen suchen das Verst~ndnis ffir die mathematische Behandlung biologischer Fragen zu fSrdern und slnd sehon aus diesem Grunde zu begrtiBen, d a e s bisher in deutscher Spracho, zum mindesten ffir den biologischen Statistiker und Erbforsoher, wenig Literatur auf diesem Grenzgebiet g i b t . -Polya-Ziirich gibt eine sehr gute, zum grSBten Tell auch fiir den Nichtmathematiker, versffindliche Darstellung der Wahrschein]ichkeitslehre und Fehlerberechnung. Er bringt die kbleitung und Begriindung aueh derjenigen S[itze und Formeln, die der Genetiker gewohnt ist als gegeben hinzunehmen, wie die mathematische Ableitung der Binomialformel, die Methode der kleinsten Quadrate, die ~ormeln yon Poisson und Laplace. Obg]eieh der Text sieh fast v011st~ndig auf die mathematisehen Begrfindungen besehr~inkt, wird dooh der praktlschen Anwendung der Theorie reich]lob Reehnung getragen dureh die 32 in den Text eingefiigten ~bungsfragen, yon denen die meisten der Biologic, nur wenige der Physik entnommen sind. Diese Aufgaben sind didaktiseh sehr geschickt gew~hlt und ihre Durcharbeitung wird jedem Leser als Kontrolle ffir das erlangte voile Versffindnis der Materie anzuraten seth. --Leider beseh[iftigt sich auch die zweite Abhandlung, yon Riebesell, und zwar, ~ie der Verfasser in der Einleitung sagt, der Absicht des Herausgebers entsprechend, im wesentlichen wiedcr mit der m a t h c m a t i s c h e n Meihode der Biometrik und Variationsstatistik. Eine Darstelluvg, die diese Gebiete mehr yon der biolog i s c h -p r a k t i s c h e n Seite erfaBte, ware wohl grade als Erg~inzung der streng mathematischen Abhandlung Polyas willkommener gewesen. Uns fehlt z. B. vollkommen eine kritische Darstellung der neueren englisch-amerikanisehen Methoden zur Beurteilung der Wahrscbeinlichkeit, mit der eine Abweichung yon der theoretischen Zahl als Folge yon Zufallsfehleln anzusehen ist. Bisher sind die Abhandlungen yon Pearson, Harris, Haldane usw., in keiner deutschen Abhandlung erwahnt worden~ lind das Verst~indnis genetischer ausllindiseher Literatur in zahlenkritischer Hinsicht ist dadurch sehr erschwert. Das gleiche gilt yon der reehnerisehen Behandlung der Koppelungs-und Faktorenaustausch-Fragen. --Riebesell behandelt spezieller, aber im wesentlichen nach den uns yon Johannsen und Lang vertrauten Methoden die Fragen der arithmetischen Reihen, die Variabiiit~itsmasse~ die Schiefheit und den Exzel~ yon Kurven, die
