An inexpensive method for identifying high phosphorus (P) loads on ditches carrying water from critical source areas ("hot spots", i.e. manure-affected areas) was tested. Water flowing from the hot-spot areas is rich in dissolved nutrients (e.g. P) and nutrient-rich eroded material. In this study the water from hot spots contained an average of 2.2 mg/l dissolved reactive P but field ditch water 0.14 mg/l. We selected 62 ditches with varying P-load levels for sediment analysis. Five ponds and 16 lakes were also studied. The sediment samples were analysed by the AAAc-extraction (0.5 M ammonium acetate, 0.5 M acetic acid, pH 4.65) method used for routine soil testing in Finland. The analysis of sediment AAAc-P proved to be a useful method for identifying ditches carrying high P waters from hot spots. Half of the ditch sediments in the hot spot ditches showed high or excessive P concentrations. AAAc extraction of the sediment is less expensive than water analysis and the sampling can be extended to periods when no water flows in the ditches.;
Permanent grass vegetation on sloping soils is an option to protect fi elds from erosion, but decaying grass may liberate considerable amounts of dissolved reactive P (DRP) in springtime runoff . We studied the eff ects of freezing and thawing of grassed soil on surface runoff P concentrations by indoor rainfall simulations and tested whether the peak P concentrations could be reduced by amending the soil with P-binding materials containing Ca ) was applied on presaturated samples set at a slope of 5% and the surface runoff was analyzed for DRP, total dissolved P (TDP), total P (TP), and suspended solids. Rainfall simulation was repeated twice after the samples were frozen. Freezing and thawing of the samples increased the surface runoff DRP concentration of the control treatment from 0.19 to 0.46 mg L −1 , up to 2.6-3.7 mg L −1, with DRP being the main P form in surface runoff . Compared with the controls, surface runoff from soils amended with Fe compounds had 57 to 80% and 47 to 72% lower concentrations of DRP and TP, respectively, but the gypsum and chalk powder did not aff ect the P concentrations. Th us, amendments containing Fe might be an option to improve DRP retention in, e.g., buff er zones.
The growing popularity of horse keeping is accompanied by an increase of phosphorus (P) and faecal micro-organisms from outdoor paddocks. We used an indoor rainfall simulation to monitor concentrations of dissolved reactive P (DRP) and faecal coliforms in runoff and percolation water from different paddock footings. Drainage water was also monitored from two paddocks constructed of woodchips. Sand retained more DRP (p<0.0001) and coliforms from percolation water than woodchips. Some of the footings were amended with P-sorbing materials, such as [Ca(OH)2], [Fe2(SO4)3], or Fe-gypsum, to retain DRP. High DRP concentrations (17–18 mg l-1) were observed in runoff from a woodchip footing amended earlier with Ca(OH)2 and in sand footing amended with CaCO3. However, application of Fe-gypsum to woodchips decreased the DRP load in percolation water by 83% compared to the footing without Fe-gypsum. Fe compounds were better than Ca compounds. The decrease in coliforms was usually small due to the modest pH changes in the water.
Conversion of dissolved P by ferric sulfate into a particulate form sparingly available to algae was studied in 15 ditches in Finland using stand-alone dispensers for ferric sulfate administration. Ferric sulfate typically converted 60–70 % of dissolved P into iron-associated form, a process which required 250–650 kg per kg dissolved P. Mean cost was 160 EUR per kg P converted (range 20–400 EUR kg−1). The costs were lowest at sites characterized by high dissolved P concentrations and small catchment area. At best, the treatment was efficient and cost-effective, but to limit the costs and the risks, ferric sulfate dispensers should only be installed in small critical source areas.
Osa tarhoista on perustettu metsään. Tarhoista aiheutuvaanravinnekuormitukseen vaikuttavat monet asiat. Peltoviljelyn aiheuttamaa vesistökuormitusta on pyritty vähentämään monilla eri toimenpiteillä.
