He has been involved in coastal and estuarine observations, circulation modelling and prediction for over thirty years, and has published over 30 peer-reviewed papers and book chapters and many more reports and proceedings. He is presently very keen on development of techniques and models for accurate real-time forecasting of water levels, currents, temperature and salinity and the practical application of these tools to marine navigation, emergency response and ecological issues. Kurt W Hess, PhD, is a senior oceanographer who has worked for many years at NOAA in the fields of numerical circulation modelling and environmental forecasting. He is presently a contractor for the Chesapeake Research Consortium of Annapolis, Maryland, and is working closely with CSDL on the software for vertical datum transformation (VDatum) and on other modelling and hydrographic surveying techniques.
