MAST is one of the new generation of large, purpose-built spherical tokamaks (STs) now becoming operational, designed to investigate the properties of the ST in large, collisionless plasmas. The first six months of MAST operations have been remarkably successful. Operationally, both merging-compression and the more usual solenoid induction schemes have been demonstrated, the former providing over 400 kA of plasma current with no demand on solenoid flux. Good vacuum conditions and operational conditions, particularly after boronization in trimethylated boron, have provided plasma current of over 1 MA with central plasma temperatures (ohmic) of order 1 keV. The Hugill and Greenwald limits can be exceeded and H mode achieved at modest additional NBI power. Moreover, particle and energy confinement show an immediate increase at the L-H transition, unlike the case of START, where this became apparent only at the highest plasma currents. Halo currents are small, with low toroidal peaking factors, in accordance with theoretical predictions, and there is evidence of a resilience to the major disruption.
Integrated modelling of important plasma physics issues related to the design of a steady-state spherical tokamak (ST) fusion power plant is described. The key is a steady-state current drive, and 92% of this is provided by a combination of bootstrap and diamagnetic currents, both of which have a substantial toroidal component in a ST. The remaining current is to be provided by either neutral beam injection or radio-frequency waves, and various schemes for providing this are discussed and quantified. The desire to achieve a high bootstrap current drives the design to high plasma pressure, β (normalized to the magnetic field pressure), and high elongation. Both these requirements have implications for ideal magneto-hydrodynamic instability which are discussed. Confinement is addressed both through comparison with the recent scaling laws developed from the conventional tokamak database and selfconsistent one-dimensional modelling of the transport processes. This modelling shows that the power required for the current drive (∼50 MW) is sufficient to heat the plasma to a regime where more than 3 GW of fusion power is produced, taking into account the dilution due to He ash and prompt α-particle losses, which are small. A preliminary study of the micro-instabilities, which may be responsible for the turbulent transport is provided. Given assumptions about the particle confinement, we make estimates of the fuelling requirements to maintain the steady state. Finally, the power loading due to the exhaust is derived using theory-based scalings for the scrape-off layer width.
The optical thickness of the plasma is often insufficient to fully absorb the microwaves during heating at the second harmonic of the electron cyclotron frequency. An analysis of the experiments to the T-10 tokamak allows us to find the criteria for the full absorption, and to construct a canonical profile transport model for the full and partial absorptions of microwaves. The conditions to the equivalence of discharges in different tokamaks, and in a pair of tokamaks with the optimized W7-X stellarator are formulated. For equivalent discharges, calculations to the T-15MD tokamak under construction with the obtained model coincide with measurements of electron and ion temperatures in the W7-X over a wide range of plasma densities. The validated model is used to analyze future shots of T-15MD.
It has been observed in the T-10 tokamak that immediately after off-axis electron cyclotron resonance heating (ECRH) switch-off, the core electron temperature stays constant for some time, which can be as long as several tens of milliseconds, i.e. several energy confinement times (τ E), before it starts to decrease. Whether or not the effect is observed depends critically on the local magnetic shear in the vicinity of the q = 1 rational surface, which should be close to zero. It is hypothesized that a small shear can induce the formation of an internal transport barrier. Measurements of density fluctuations in the transport barrier with a correlation reflectometer show immediately after the ECRH switch-off a clear reduction in the fluctuation level, corroborating the above results. The delayed temperature decrease has also been observed in similar discharges in the TEXTOR tokamak; however, the delay is restricted to ∼1×τ E .
