SUMMARY
Watering methods in pot experimentsThe importance of the frequency of watering in pot experiments has been studied. An experiment was carried out with three soll-sand mixtures (0, 50 and 66% sand) using 5-1itre Mitscherlich pots. The treatments were 5 rates of NPK application and 3 watering regimes (1, 2 or 4 times daily). In the case of pots with a large quantity of tops it was necessary to weigh and water the pots several times daily if a maximum response to the fertilizer treatments was to be obtained. A soll with a high clay or Mit content will only give maximum yields with an admixture of sand. The smaller the amount of sand added the higher the frequency of watering should be. Watering frequency treatments did not affect nitrogen uptake by the plants in fertilized soll. In unfertilized soil, however, admixture with sand decreased nitrogen uptake.
