Long ago, Allan suggested that the V(001) surface could be magnetic even if bulk vanadium is not. Later on, Freeman realized an ab‐initio calculation (FLAPW) and got that the V(001) surface is not magnetic. Experiments by Rau and co‐workers gave a finite magnetic moment and the question whether V(001) is magnetic or not was never settled. In this work, we face two aspects of this problem. In the first part, we explore with a tight‐binding model the effect of the difference of 5.3% on the theoretical lattice parameter as compared to experiment. In the second part, we look at the effect that the contraction of the first interlayer distance has on the electronic structure at the surface. According to our results the possibility of a contraction up to 5% is worth studying in more detail since an overall acceptable agreement between experiment and theory seems to be more realistic in this way.
scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
