Lupinus albus L. (lupine) is a legume whose grain/seed has gained increasing interest. Its recognized nutritional properties, namely a high content of protein, dietary fiber and its low fat content, make lupine a suitable alternative not only for animal protein, but also as a substitute for more processed and less balanced flours from a nutritional point of view, used in the preparation of bread, cakes and cookies, among others. In addition, its nutritional and bioactive compounds have potential benefits for human health in the prevention and treatment of some diseases. However, the existence of some anti-nutritional compounds and contaminants reveal some concern, requiring effective methods for their detection and eventual removal. This review intends to address the potential of lupine (L. albus) in food and human health and to balance the pros and cons. Nutritional and anti-nutritional components of L. albus seeds and possible contaminants of lupine seeds are examined. The potential health benefits of lupine (seeds), including energy metabolism, cardiovascular diseases, hypertension, glucose and insulin metabolism, bower function and anticonvulsant action, are discussed based on scientific evidence (both clinical trials and studies performed with animal models).

Background This study aimed to determine the allometric exponents for concurrent size descriptors (stature, body mass and fat-free mass) and also to examine the contribution of chronological age and pubertal status combined with above mentioned size descriptors to explain inter-individual variability in the peak of oxygen uptake ( V O 2peak ) among girls during circumpubertal years. Methods The final sample included 51 girls (10.7–13.5 years). V O 2peak was derived from an incremental progressive maximal protocol using a motorized treadmill. Anthropometry included body mass, stature and skinfolds. Measurements were performed by a single trained observer. Sexual maturation was assessed as self-reported stage of pubic hair (PH) development. Static allometric models were explored as an alternative to physiological output per unit of size descriptors. Allometry also considered chronological age and sexual maturation as dummy variable (PH2 vs. PH3 and PH3 vs. PH4). Results Scaling coefficients for stature, body mass and fat-free mass were 1.463 (95%CI: 0.476 to 2.449), 0.516 (95%CI: 0.367 to 0.666) and 0.723 (95%CI: 0.494 to 0.951), respectively. The inclusion of sexual maturation increased explained variance for V O 2peak (55% for PH2 vs. PH3 and 47% for PH3 vs. PH4). Body mass was identified as the most prominent body size descriptor in the PH2 vs. PH3 while fat-free mass was the most relevant predictor combined with PH3 vs. PH4. Conclusions Body mass and fat-free mass seemed to establish a non-linear relationship with V O 2peak . Across puberty, inter-individual variability in V O 2peak is explained by sexual maturation combined with whole body during early puberty and by sexual maturation and fat-free mass during late puberty. Additional studies need to confirm ontogenetic allometric models during years of maximal growth.

Neonatal cyanosis in healthy newborns can be associated either with methemoglobin due to cytochrome b5 reductase deficiency or to M-Hemoglobin, a group of hemoglobin variants resulting from mutations in the globin chain genes. We report the clinical case of a neonate with cyanosis and normal cardiac and respiratory function. At birth the hematological parameters were normal; however the methemoglobinemia was 16%. Spontaneously the cyanosis gradually decreased and by the fifth month of age the methemoglobin level wasnormal. An heterozygous G globin gene (HBG2) missense mutation 87 C-A (Leu28Met) was identified. His father, with a past history of transfusion in the neonatal period, is heterozygous for the same mutation. This hemoglobin variant, not previously described, was called Hb-FViseu and is the sixth G gamma chain variant reported in association with neonatal cyanosis.
