Themosturgent problems in the process of firing magnesite in rotary furnaces are the degree of cleaning of the effluent gas from dust, the effective use of the dust, and an increase in theamount of fine-grain powders suitable in chemical composition for the production of goods.The degree of dust-removal from the effluent gas has been significantly increased as a result ofimprovements to the dust-removal systems [1][2][3]. The amount of dust removed was increased and its properties sharply changed.The dust absorbs SO2, F, and alkali vapor from the effluent gas and contains sulfites of alkali and alkaline-earth metals and magnesium fluoride [i]. It was shown in [4][5] that it is not possible to make use of such dust by firing it in a rotary furnace to a sintered powder because of the incrustation of the exhaust-heat boilers (EB) by the dusty deposits and frequent stoppages of the furnace for cleaning the EB heater surfaces and because of contamination of the surrounding atmosphere by sulfur compounds.The total elimination of atmospheric pollution by sulfur compounds and of the encrustation of the EB and the maximum output of fine-grain powders for the production of other goods are provided by the new technology for utilizing dusts in the production of refractories which includes the preliminary dispersion of the dust in water and washing out the sulfates [6]. The process has not been realized because of the lack of threshold to the elimination of salts from the dust and the filtration of the slurry.It is worth considering additional equipment and use of the existing slurry-milling section for achieving this retreatment process for the dust which is the most contaminated by sulfur compounds in a sufficient volume to charge one 90-m rotating furnace.A study with the aim of developing a fairly simple process for the utilization of caustic dust has been carried out in the No. 5 rotary furnace of diameter 4.5 and length 170 m which was brought on line in December, 1980. Unlike other furnaces, this furnace is fitted with new electric filters made in Czechoslovakia and, in addition, instruments connected to the control panel for monitoring the temperature and pressure before and after the EB, in front of the cyclones and electric filters, and after the electrical filters and in front of the flues; this has made it easier for the operative to carry out the firing process.In particular, we studied the effect of the ratio of dust to raw material in the mixture supplied for firing on the parameters and operational characteristics of the rotary furnace.The firing regimes studied and the main characteristics of the furnace operation are given in Table 1 and illustrated in Figs. 1-6.
