A new phenomenon in necking of some polymers, including poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PETP) was detected. It was found that extension of PETP films under certain conditions results in periodic stress oscillations and a periodic change in appearance of the sample. The conditions at which self‐oscillations appear have been determined, and the principal regularities of this regime of deformation are described. The following factors are critical for the appearance of self‐oscillation: speed of straining and compliance of the sample. The self‐oscillation of stress and formation of the periodic transverse bands is attributed to heat dissipation during necking corresponding to local temperature jumps and periodic strong variation of elasticity modulus due to poor heat conductivity of the polymer. Changing the external conditions of heat transfer influences the possibility and development of the effect. The phenomenon is common for various crystallizing polymers, being dependent on physical properties of the polymer and conditions of deformation.

Organic luminophores are widely used in various optoelectronic devices, which serve for photonics, nuclear and particle physics, quantum electronics, medical diagnostics and many other fields of science and technology. Improving their spectral-luminescent characteristics for particular technical requirements of the devices is a challenging task. Here we show a new concept to universal solution of this problem by creation of nanostructured organosilicon luminophores (NOLs), which are a particular type of dendritic molecular antennas. They combine the best properties of organic luminophores and inorganic quantum dots: high absorption cross-section, excellent photoluminescence quantum yield, fast luminescence decay time and good processability. A NOL consists of two types of covalently bonded via silicon atoms organic luminophores with efficient Förster energy transfer between them. Using NOLs in plastic scintillators, widely utilized for radiation detection and in elementary particles discoveries, led to a breakthrough in their efficiency, which combines both high light output and fast decay time. Moreover, for the first time plastic scintillators, which emit light in the desired wavelength region ranging from 370 to 700 nm, have been created. We anticipate further applications of NOLs as working elements of pulsed dye lasers in photonics, optoelectronics and as fluorescent labels in biology and medical diagnostics.

A novel approach to design chitosan-polyester materials is reported. The method is based on mechanical activation and effective intermixing of the substrates under high pressure and shear deformation in the course of solid-state reactive blending. The marked departure of this approach from previous practice resides on exploitation of a variety of chemical transformations of the solid polymers that become feasible under conditions of plastic flow. Low temperatures (aboveTgbut below the melting points of the crystalline polymers) are maintained throughout the process, minimizing mechanical and oxidative degradation of the polymers. Morphology as well as structural, mechanical, and relaxation properties of those prepared blends of chitosan with semicrystalline poly(L,L-lactide) and amorphous poly(D,L-lactide-co-glycolide) has been studied. Grafting of polyester moieties onto chitosan chains was found to occur under employed pressures and shear stresses. The prepared polymer blends have demonstrated an amphiphilic behavior with a propensity to disperse in organic solvents that widens possibilities to transform them into promising materials for various biomedical applications.

A new microscopic procedure for the visualization of structural rearrangements in amorphous polymers during their deformation to high strains is described. This approach involves the deposition of thin (several nanometers) metallic coatings onto the surface of the deformed polymer. Subsequent deformation entails the formation of a relief in the deposited coating that can be studied by direct microscopic methods. The above phenomenon of relief formation provides information concerning the deformation mechanism of the polymer support. Experimental data obtained with the use of this procedure are reported, and this evidence allows analysis of the specific features of structural rearrangements during deformation of the amorphous polymer at temperatures above and below its glass transition temperature under the conditions of plane compression and stretching, uniaxial tensile drawing and shrinkage, rolling, and environmental crazing. This direct structural approach originally justified in the works by Academician V.A. Kargin appears to be highly efficient for the study of amorphous polymer systems.
