RESUMO -Atualmente, a Agência Nacional de Petróleo, Gás Natural e Biocombustíveis (ANP) estabelece a obrigatoriedade de adição de marcadores a determinados derivados de petróleo. Entretanto, estes marcadores são importados e pesquisas vêm sendo desenvolvidas para obtenção de marcadores nacionais competitivos, o que caracteriza uma importante área da Engenharia de Materiais. Certas propostas de marcadores nacionais são baseadas em marcadores coloridos decorrentes do fenômeno de fluorescência. O objetivo deste trabalho foi estudar as propriedades ópticas de fluorescência dos principais combustíveis derivados de petróleo, por estes serem os solventes em que os marcadores podem ser aplicados. Contudo, os combustíveis fósseis são resultantes de frações do petróleo que contém misturas de moléculas orgânicas alifáticas, aromáticas e compostos de enxofre, oxigênio e nitrogênio. Percebeu-se que os hidrocarbonetos alifáticos, que representam a maior parte desses líquidos e são tão importantes para a combustão, não possuem fluorescência intrínseca, como esperado pela literatura. Já as moléculas aromáticas, presentes em menor quantidade nos combustíveis e muitas vezes tratadas como impurezas, possuem fluorescência na região da luz visível. Desvendar quais as principais moléculas aromáticas responsáveis pela fluorescência de cada combustível é um desafio, considerando-se a alta complexidade dessas misturas orgânicas.
