These findings demonstrate that Aboriginal youth require different tobacco control strategies compared to non-Aboriginal youth. While these youth experience similar risk factors associated with smoking status, based on the earlier initiation age, tobacco prevention needs to commence much earlier. This study also showcases the positive role that involvement in physical activity plays in building resiliency among Aboriginal youth.

This approach is currently preferred for achieving sustainable results in marginalised populations because of the level of control that is achieved in the study population. The amount of community involvement has varied from study to study, however the theory is that maximum community involvement is optimal. It is now realised that these self-directed programmes are more beneficial to a community then when solely directed by an external party
