Objective:The study was done to determine the prevalence of malocclusion and orthodontic treatment among orphan children. Materials and methods:The sample consisted of 165 orphan children aged between 12 and 15 years. A clinical examination was used to determine the orthodontic treatment need according to the Dental Aesthetic Index (DAI). The statistical software namely SPSS version 15.0 was used for the analysis different parameters as gender and age. Results:The prevalence of definite, severe and very severe malocclusion was more among males than females and it increased with age. 16.4% subjects needed orthodontic treatment ranging from slight to mandatory form. Clinical significance:The prevalence and severity of malocclusion was more among orphan children as they are deprived of healthy lifestyle. So, they should be identified and corrective measures instituted at the earliest to prevent a widespread impact on their psychological development.
Aim This study was undertaken to analyze the clinical usefulness of the maxillomandibular bisector, its reproducibility, its validity and its relationship to the functional occlusal plane, the bisecting occlusal plane and the nature of its cant. Materials and methods Thirty pretreatment lateral cephalograms, each of adolescents (above 18 years of age) and children (10- 12 years), seeking orthodontic treatment were randomly selected and the Wits technique of anteroposterior measurement was used to compare A-B values measured to the new plane with those measured to the functional occlusal plane (FOP) and to the traditional or bisecting occlusal plane (BOP). Results Present study showed that MM bisector plane is more reproducible and valid reference plane, than the FOP and BOP. Conclusion A new plane, geometrically derived from the dental base planes, has been tested as an occlusal plane substitute for the measurement of anteroposterior jaw relationships. It lies close to but at an angle and inferior to the traditional occlusal planes and is highly reproducible at all times. Clinical significance Maxillomandibular planes angle bisector may be a useful adjunct for the cephalometric assessment of sagittal relationship of the patient. The benign cementoblastoma (BC) or ''true'' cementoma is a rare neoplasm arising from the odontogenic ectomesenchyme. It accounts for 1% to 6.2% of all odontogenic tumors. It more frequently affects young males in an age range of 20 to 30 years, occurring commonly in the mandible. BC usually presents as a distinct lesion with characteristic radiographic and histopathological features. It is always slow growing and attached to the roots of posterior teeth. Majority of the BC are asymptomatic until it produces pain, expansion of the jaws or compression of the inferior alveolar nerve. Well defined radiopacity surrounded by a peripheral radiolucent halo is the most striking features of BC. Hereby we report the case of BC in a 28 years old female patient and also an attempt was made to discuss the clinicopathologic features, diagnosis and treatment of BC with brief literature review.
The diode laser has become an important dental armamentarium because of its exceptional ease of use and affordability. The lasers have many advantages with regard to periodontal treatment. For all soft tissue procedures, the diode laser functions as the handpiece, just like a dental handpiece for all hard tissue procedures. The main advantages of the diode laser for soft tissue applications are precise surgical procedure, bloodless surgery, sterilization of the surgical site, least possible swelling and scarring, negligible suturing, and practically no pain during and after surgery. In cosmetic dentistry, providing a desirable smile is one of the main concerns. Hyperpigmentation is one of the esthetic concerns especially in patients with black and discolored gums. Gingival depigmentation can be performed by means of surgical blade, electrosurgery, coarse diamond bur, cryosurgery, or lasers. Bearing in mind the advantages of lasers over other modalities of treatment, the present article will target on the management of such a case using diode lasers.
