The Fleet, Dorset, UK is a large macro tidal marine lagoon which carries a significant population of rotifers living in the algae present along its length . Some of the physical and chemical characteristics of the lagoon were examined and related to rotifer total abundance and species richness . A preliminary list of species found at different sampling stations is given . A strong negative correlation between salinity and total abundance was found . A similar negative correlation between species richness and salinity was also found . A description of Proales fleetensis sp . nov. i s given .
The relative density of Polyarthra major and Keratella cochlearis was measured by centrifugation in solutions of different densities. Ficoll was used as the solute. The mean values for the relative density of living specimens of I? major was found to be 1.0277 0.0062. The value for preserved animals was lower at1.0160 f 0.0029. The relative density of fixed specimens of K. cochlearis was measured and found to be approximately 1.0450 + 0.0175.
scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
