Plasticity theory is widely used to describe the behaviour of soil and rock in many engineering situations. Plasticity and Geomechanics presents a concise introduction to the general subject of plasticity with a particular emphasis on applications in geomechanics. Derived from the authors' own lecture notes, this book is written with students firmly in mind. Excessive use of mathematical methods is avoided in the main body of the text and, where possible, physical interpretations are given for important concepts. In this way the authors present a clear introduction to the complex ideas and concepts of plasticity as well as demonstrating how this developing subject is of critical importance to geomechanics and geotechnical engineering. This book therefore complements Elasticity and Geomechanics by the same authors and will appeal to graduate students and researchers in the fields of soil mechanics, foundation engineering, and geomechanics.

This article presents an overview of the application of analytical methods in the theories of elasticity, poroelasticity, flow, and transport in porous media and plasticity to the solution of boundary value problems and initial boundary value problems of interest to geomechanics. The paper demonstrates the role of the analytical method in geomechanics in providing useful results that have practical importance, pedagogic value, and serve as benchmarking tools for calibrating computational methodologies that are ultimately used for solving more complex practical problems in geomechanics. The FEBEX (Full-scale Engineered Barriers Experiment in Crystalline Host Rock) ''in situ'' test was installed at the Grimsel Test Site underground laboratory (Switzerland) and is a near-to-real scale simulation of the Spanish reference concept of deep geological storage in crystalline host rock. A modelling exercise, aimed at predicting field behaviour, was divided in three parts. In Part A, predictions for both the total water inflow to the tunnel as well as the water pressure changes induced by the boring of the tunnel were required. In Part B, predictions for local field variables, such as temperature, relative humidity, stresses and displacements at selected points in the bentonite barrier, and global variables, such as the total input power to the heaters were required. In Part C, predictions for temperature, stresses, water pressures and displacements in selected points of the host rock were required. Ten Modelling Teams from Europe, North America and Japan were involved in the analysis of the test. Differences among approaches may be found in the constitutive models used, in the simplifications made to the balance equations and in the geometric symmetries considered. The partial differential equations governing non‐isothermal flow and deformation in an elastic medium with double porosity are presented. The governing equations satisfy an effective stress concept, Darcy's law, Fourier' law and the equations of Hookean thermoelasticity. The equations are derived using a systematic macroscopic approach that satisfies conservation laws applicable to balance of linear momentum, mass and energy. The Thermo‐Hydro‐Mechanical coupling take into account processes associated with: thermal expansion, thermal convection by moving fluid, fluid flux due to temperature gradients, heat flux due to pressure gradients, fluid and heat exchange between the two pore system, and the heat of phase compression.

International audienceSoil compaction not only reduces available pore volume in which fluids are stored, but it alters the arrangement of soil constituents and pore geometry, thereby adversely impacting fluid transport and a range of soil ecological functions. Quantitative understanding of stress transmission and deformation processes in arable soils remains limited. Yet such knowledge is essential for better predictions of effects of soil management practices such as agricultural field traffic on soil functioning. Concepts and theory used in agricultural soil mechanics (soil compaction and soil tillage) are often adopted from conventional soil mechanics (e.g. foundation engineering). However, in contrast with standard geotechnical applications, undesired stresses applied by agricultural tyres/tracks are highly dynamic and last for very short times. Moreover, arable soils are typically unsaturated and contain important secondary structures (e.g. aggregates), factors important for affecting their soil mechanical behaviour. Mechanical processes in porous media are not only of concern in soil mechanics, but also in other fields including geophysics and granular material science. Despite similarity of basic mechanical processes, theoretical frameworks often differ and reflect disciplinary focus. We review concepts from different but complementary fields concerned with porous media mechanics and highlight opportunities for synergistic advances in understanding deformation and compaction of arable soils. We highlight the important role of technological advances in non-destructive measurement methods at pore (X-ray tomography) and soil profile (seismic) scales that not only offer new insights into soil architecture and enable visualization of soil deformation, but are becoming instrumental in the development and validation of new soil compaction models. The integration of concepts underlying dynamic processes that modify soil pore spaces and bulk properties will improve the understanding of how soil management affect vital soil mechanical, hydraulic and ecological functions supporting plant growth

The permeability of intact Barre granite is determined by conducting transient hydraulic pulse tests that induce radial flow in saturated granite cylinders containing a water-filled co-axial cavity. Saturated specimens of granite are also subjected to uniform heating on the outer cylindrical surface and the permeability of the granite is measured at the termination of a heating sequence. The theoretical basis for the use of simplified analytical solutions for evaluating the decay of the pressure pulse is examined and the permeability of the granite in the pre-heating and post-heating states is inferred from the results of pulse tests. The reported investigations document one of the limited numbers of large-scale laboratory tests conducted to determine the permeability characteristics of intact granite. The results of the permeability measurements indicate the absence of any appreciable influences of micro structural alterations in the fabric of the granite due to its heating in a saturated condition, at an average temperature of 140°Celsius.
