SYNOPSIS
In a survey of 867 Aboriginal primary school children at Cherbourg, Palm Island and Yarrabah, data was collected from measurement of height, weight and head circumference; clinical examination of ears, nose and throat; bacteriological examination of nose and ear swabs; hearing thresholds at four frequency points; and measurements of middle ear compliance and middle ear reflex activity.
The overall incidence of perforated tympanic membranes was 13% and there was a hearing loss in 36% of 867 children. The significance of the differences in the findings among the settlements is discussed. Tympanometry proved useful as a screening procedure in support of otoscopy and audiology.
