Summary: In the region of Göttingen the following keratinophilic fungi were found in the superficial soil (relation of the number of soil samples in which a special sort of fungi were found to the total number of samples): Chrysosporium evolceanui 19.3%, Chrysosporium pannorum 2.4%, Chrysosporium keratinophilum 13.2%, Microsporum cookei 0.7%, Microsporum fulvum 1.7%, Microsporum gypseum 14.9%, Trichophyton ajelloi 68.5%, Trichophyton terrestre 9.4%, Trichophyton vanbreuseghemii 0.3%.
The average of infestation was 90.5% and the average number of species per samples was 1.31.
To obtain epidemiologic usable statements these general results were differentiated under special aspects.
This led to the result that the presence of organic material in the soil and an optimal pH are necessary conditions for the infestation of the soil by geophilic keratinophilic fungi. On the other hand, the species of microsporum react very sensitively upon these factors of environment while C. evolceanui, C. keratinophilum, T. ajelloi and T. terrestre can be characterized as moderate.
