Positive skin tests and specific IgE to food or inhalant allergens were related to the clinical expression of different atopic diseases. The combination of AD and food allergy at 12 months reflected the strongest risk factor in this high risk cohort for the development of asthma-like disease at 24 months of age.
Although anaphylaxis due to trimethoprim seems to be rare, it may be more common than previously thought. Apparently, anaphylaxis to cotrimoxazole is not always caused by sulphamethoxazole.
Introduction. IgE‐mediated allergy to natural rubber latex is a growing concern in healthcare, not only for patients but also for healthcare workers. There is no information about the prevalence in The Netherlands.
Objective. The prevalence of IgE‐mediated latex allergy was studied in 163 workers in the operating room complex of the University Hospital, Rotterdam, as a basis for preventive measures.
Methods. Questionnaires, serological testing and skin prick tests with different extracts were used.
Results. At a response rate of 70%, a prevalence of latex sensitization of 14.1% was found, with a significantly higher risk for atopic persons (odds ratio 4.3). Sixty‐nine per cent were symptomatic.
Conclusion. The prevalence of latex sensitization in O.R. workers is high. These findings should lead to a change in the glove policy.
