RAPPORT raines pendant l'expédition de M. d'Urville, et, par un de ces hasards heureux qui sont hors de la prévoyance humaine , il a aussi retrouvé des traces de l'expédition de La Pérouse : que s'il n'a pas pu jouir d'un bonheur complet en ramenant dans leur patrie quelques-uns de ses infortunés compagnons de voyage, M. d'Urville a eu du moins la consolation de leur élever, sur le lieu même de leur désastre , un monument qui témoignera l'intérêt que leurs compatriotes ont pris à leur sort , et les regrets que leur perte n'a cessé d'inspirer dans les lieux où ils ont pris naissance.M. d'Urville s'est attaché avec un zèle et une persévérance infatigables à remplir tous les objets de la mission qu'il avait reçue ; il a été secondé avec le même zèle et une activité surprenante par tous ceux qui ont servi sous ses ordres : les résultats de sa campagne sont immenses. Cinquante-trois cartes ou plans des côtes, des ports ou mouillages, ont été rédigés pendant la campagne , douze autres plans ou cartes n'ont été qu'esquissés. Les cartes terminées ont été levées d'après les meilleures méthodes , et rédigées avec un soin digne des plus grands éloges.Elles donneront aux navigateurs qui visiteront les mêmes parages, le moyen de se conduire avec la plus grande sécurité. Les cartes ou plans incomplets auront sans doute la même précision.Les dessins destinés à faire connaître l'aspect des lieux, l'espèce d'hommes qui les habite , leurs costumes , leurs armes , leurs habitations, etc., sont très-nombreux; ils se montent à huit cent soixante-six : on les doit à M. de Sainson. Si à ce nombre déjà assez considérable on ajoute quatre cents dessins de vues de côtes , par M. Lauvergne, la totalité des dessins qui sont le fruit de la DE M. DE ROSSEL. lxxix campagne de M. d'Urville se portera à douze cent soixante -six , consacrés seulement aux parties historique et nautique du Voyage. Sans doute il sera impossible de les publier en totalité ; mais M. d'Urville , par un choix judicieux et rempli de goût , en retranchera les dessins qui offrent un moindre intérêt ; l'on peut s'en rapporter au discernement qui le guidera pour être persuadé que les savans et les curieux n'auront rien d'essentiel à regretter. Je n'entrerai pas ici dans les détails de tous les différons titres sous lesquels on peut comprendre la masse considérable des dessins dont il vient d'être question ; je ne puis cependant passer sous silence les réflexions que m'a suggérées la belle collection des portraits des habitans, composée de cent cinquante-trois figures.
