The morphology of head capsule, mouthparts and cranial chaetotaxy are described comprehensively. The morphometric study of 34 morphological characters is made to understand the geometric as well as allometric growth pattern of larval P. xanthorrhoea (KOLLAR).The eggs laid in captivity by moths and also collected from sunflower field were put to hatch. The larvae were maintained on host plant (Helianthus annuus LINN.) leaves till they transformed into pupa. The larval stages experienced temperature ranging between 33.60 k 0.92 "C (max.) and 30.95 0.86 "C (min.), and 66.48 k 8.90 RH. To describe morphology and chaetotaxy, camera lucida sketchings were done directly from balsam mounted exnvae of cranium of fourth instar. Head capsule of the same instar was dissected to disarticulate the head appendages for preparing the balsam mounts. Exuvae from different instars were mounted to ascertain the position of setae and punctures and further to permit metrical measurements using a combination of ocular and stage micrometers.The mean value of metrical measurements of ten replicates of different characters of each instar was recorded. The ratio between succeeding and preceding instar was calculated as ratio of increase. Whereas the mean value for each character during successive instars gave the progression factor. Linear relation log y = a + bx, where 'y' is the measured value of the character, 'x' is the number of instars, 'a' is a constant and 'b' is the logrithm of the progression factor, is used to describe the geometrical progression of the characters. HUXLEY and TEISSIBR'S (1 936) allometric formula y = bx", by which the size of an organ (y) is expressed as a funclion of body length (x), with 'a' and 'b' as constant denoting growth ratio and initial growth index, respectively, has been used for allometric growth analysis.
