A Chinese calendar savant was investigated on his exceptional proficiency in calendar calculation and his culture-specific talent of converting the Gregorian calendar to the Chinese calendar. Results did not support any one of the hypotheses of eidetic imagery, high-speed calculation, rote memorization, keying-off (anchoring) strategy, use of calendar regularities or monthly configuration as the only explanation proposed in earlier investigations. The savant's calculation ability is hypothesized to be brought about by his familiarity of the 14 calendar templates and the knowledge of matching the templates to every year. For dates that are beyond the 20th century, the calculation is by regressing the date to a corresponding year in the 20th century by additions or subtractions of 28 or 700 years with his accurate use of the simple operations in arithmetic.

Finding a job has become a critical challenge to many youth. Immigrant youth, who have been a key part of the global migrants, are particularly vulnerable when entering the job market of the host country due to various structural barriers. However, in both public policy discourse and research, their labour market experience tends to be overlooked. In this paper, we report the employment experience of recently arrived immigrant youth based on an analysis of the LSIC and findings of in-depth interviews of 82 immigrant youth in four cities in Canada. Our results reveal that recently arrived immigrant youth tend to work in lower-skilled employment, experience significant delays in finding employment, have difficulties with foreign credential recognition, and have fewer means to access to job markets.

The article discusses misunderstandings and misattunements that occur in the beginning phase of cross-cultural psychotherapy. Sources of micro ruptures are outlined, including client maladaptive patterns, therapist misunderstandings, cross-cultural misunderstandings due to cultural variations, and asymmetrical power relations involving the impact of prior experiences or current therapy practices. Multiple clinical vignettes illustrate the rupture/repair process, drawing on Safran and Muran's (2000) list of direct and indirect techniques.KEY WORDS: rupture and repair; beginning phase of psychotherapy; crosscultural psychotherapy; therapeutic relationship.Clinical social workers value the therapeutic relationship because of its potential to provide new relational experiences for clients.
