An investigation is made of the effect of uniaxial elastic strain on the pure electronic line 597 nm in the U‐band (4A2 → 4T2) of Cr3+ in ruby. The general features of the observed triplet splitting of the line by stress are in good agreement with the phenomenological calculation for lines of low‐symmetry (C1) centres in a D3d lattice. This suggests that the C3 site symmetry of Cr3+ ions in the Al2O3 lattice is destroyed and supports the hypothesis of the existence of the Jahn‐Teller effect in excited 4T2‐state of Cr3+ in ruby.
scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
