The present work explores the possibilities of the matrix isolation technique in the structural characterisation of highly flexible molecules. To date, most studies of this type were carried out on molecules with three or less internal degrees of freedom and a few (less than 10) possible conformations. The molecule of 1,2-butanediol has four conformationally relevant three-fold rotational axes, which can result in 81 possible conformations. A detailed theoretical study, at the MP2 and DFT(B3LYP) levels of theory with the 6-311++G(d,p) basis set, revealed that more than 20 conformers of 1,2-butanediol have relative energies in a 0-10 kJ mol À1 range and contribute appreciably to the gas phase equilibrium at room temperature. This fact renders conformational studies of the system extremely difficult under normal conditions. However, the method of matrix isolation permits the reduction of the number of populated conformational states in the experiment at low temperature due to the effect known as conformational cooling: low energy barriers promote the relaxation of the higher energy local minima into more stable structures. As a result of massive conformational cooling occurring upon matrix deposition, only five conformers of 1,2-butanediol were retained in the samples at 10 K. These conformers were identified using a combination of FTIR spectroscopy and extensive theoretical calculations of vibrational spectra. Annealing of the matrices up to 50 K resulted in the extreme case of conformational cooling related with the depopulation of all conformers into the most stable unique structure. The observed transformations were rationalized in terms of barriers to intramolecular rotation.

The complete conformational space of monomeric 1,3-butanediol has been characterized theoretically, and 73 unique stable conformers were found at the MP2/6-311++G(d,p) level. These were classified into nine families whose members share the same heavy atom backbone configurations and differ in the hydrogen atom orientations. The first and third most populated backbone families are governed by the formation of an intramolecular hydrogen bond; however, the second precludes this type of interaction and was frequently overlooked in previous studies. Its stability is determined by the relatively high entropy of its main conformers. The hydrogen bonding of four of the most important conformers was characterized by means of atoms in molecules (AIM, also known as QTAIM) and natural bond orbital (NBO) analyses. Using appropriate isodesmic reactions, hydrogen bonding energy stabilizations of 12-14 kJ mol(-1) have been found. Experimentally, monomeric molecules of 1,3-butanediol were isolated in low-temperature inert matrixes, and their infrared spectra were analyzed from the viewpoint of the conformational distribution. All the relevant transition states for the conformational interconversion reaction paths were characterized at the same level of theory to interpret the conformational cooling dynamics observed in the low-temperature matrixes. The energy barriers for rotation of the OH groups were calculated to be very low (<3 kJ mol(-1)). These barriers were overcome in the experiments at 10 K (Ar matrix), in the process of matrix deposition, and population within each family was reduced to the most stable conformers. Further increase in the substrate temperature (up to 40 K, Xe matrix) resulted in conformational cooling where the medium-height barriers (approximately 13 kJ mol(-1)) could be surmounted and all conformational population converted to the ground conformational state. Remarkably, this state turned to consist of two forms of the most stable hydrogen bonded family, which were predicted by calculations to be accidentally degenerated and were found in the annealed matrix in equal amounts. All of these experimentally observed conformational cooling processes were analyzed and supported by full agreement with the theoretical calculations.

Theoretical calculations at the MP2 level, NBO and AIM analysis, and matrix-isolation infrared spectroscopy have been used to investigate the structure of the isolated molecule of 1,4-butanediol (1,4-BDO). Sixty-five structures were found to be minima on the potential energy surface, and the three most stable forms are characterized by a folded backbone conformation leading to the formation of an intramolecular H-bond. To better characterize the intramolecular interactions and particularly the hydrogen bonds, natural bond orbital analysis (NBO) was performed for the four most stable conformers, and was further complemented with an atoms-in-molecules (AIM) topological analysis. Infrared spectra of 1,4-BDO isolated in low-temperature argon and xenon matrixes show a good agreement with a population-weighted mean theoretical spectrum, and the spectral features of the conformers expected to be trapped in the matrixes were observed experimentally. Annealing the xenon matrix from 20 to 60 K resulted in significant spectral changes, which were interpreted based on the barriers to intramolecular rotation. An estimation of the intramolecular hydrogen bond energy was carried out following three different methodologies.

The FT-IR spectra of two diastereomers of 2,3-butanediol, (R,S) and (S,S), isolated in low-temperature argon and xenon matrixes were studied, allowing the identification of two different conformers for each compound. These conformers were characterized by a (gauche arrangement around the O-C-C-O dihedral angle, thus enabling the establishment of a very weak intramolecular hydrogen bond of the O‚‚‚H-O type. No other forms of these compounds were identified in matrixes, despite the fact that these four conformers had calculated relative energies from 0 to 5.1 kJ mol -1 and were expected to be thermally populated from 50 to 6% in the gaseous phase of each compound. The nonobservation of additional conformers was explained in terms of low barriers to intramolecular rotation, resulting in the conformational relaxation of the compounds during deposition of the matrixes. The barriers to internal rotation of the OH groups were computed to be less than 4 kJ mol -1 and are easily overcome in matrixes within the family of conformers with the same heavy atom backbone. The barriers for intramolecular rearrangement of the O-C-C-O dihedral angle in both diastereomers were calculated to range from 20 to 30 kJ mol -1. Interconversions between the latter conformers were not observed in matrixes, even after annealing up to 65 K. Energy calculations, barriers, and calculated infrared spectra were carried out at the DFT(B3LYP)/6-311++G** theory. Additional MP2/ 6-311++G** calculations of energies and vibrational frequencies were performed on the most relevant conformers. Finally, independent estimations of the hydrogen-bond enthalpy in the studied molecules were also obtained based on theoretical structural data and from vibrational frequencies (using well-established empirical correlations). The obtained values for -∆H for both diastereomers of 2,3-butanediol amount to ca. 6-8 kJ mol -1 .

The conformers of 2-cyanophenol (2CP) and their interconversions were studied by infrared (IR) spectroscopy after trapping the monomers of the gaseous compound into low-temperature (15 K) argon (Ar) and nitrogen (N2) matrixes. To assist in the interpretation of the experimental results, B3LYP, MP2, and QCISD electronic structure calculations were carried out for the 2CP molecule. Two planar conformers, cis and trans (orientation of OH with respect to the cyano group), are predicted with gas-phase populations at the sublimation temperature of ∼98 and ∼2%, respectively. The most stable form (cis) was experimentally identified in both cryomatrixes, whereas the less stable one (trans) was not detected in Ar but could be observed in the N2 matrix with an abundance of ∼15%. Selective and bidirectional conversion between the two identified conformers was achieved upon irradiating the compound trapped in N2 matrix with near-infrared (NIR) laser light tuned at the wavenumbers of the 2ν­(OH) transitions of the respective conformers. The conformational composition of 2CP was also found to be affected by the broad-band IR radiation emitted by the spectrometer source. This effect could be suppressed, partially or completely, by using different long-pass IR filters, with cutoff values of approximately 2200, 1590, and 1170 cm–1. The observed conformational changes are rationalized in terms of a competition between the over-the-barrier (light-induced) and through-the-barrier (hydrogen atom tunneling) effects. Very interestingly, both effects occur on the same time scale.

Monomers of 2-isocyanophenol were generated in low-temperature solid Ar and N2 matrices by UV-irradiation of benzoxazole and characterized by infrared (IR) spectroscopy.Near-IR narrowband excitation of the first OH-stretching overtone of 2-isocyanophenol isolated in an N2 matrix converted the most stable cis into the higher-energy trans conformer.Interconversions between these conformers also occurred when the sample was vibrationally excited by the full, or filtered, broadband light of the spectrometer source, notably, with different isomerization rate constants. A spontaneous trans  cis decay, via H-tunneling, was observed for N2 matrix kept in dark. In an Ar matrix, only the cis conformer was observed.

Here we describe an unprecedented reversible interconversion between two conformational states, accomplished by selective vibrational excitation of a bond remotely located in relation to the isomerizing fragment. In contrast to previous studies reporting conformational changes via vibrational excitation of a nearby OH group, in this study the transformations were successfully achieved by excitation of a distant NH stretching coordinate. The syn and anti forms of monomeric 6-methoxyindole, which differ in the orientation of the methoxy group, were trapped in low-temperature inert matrixes and characterized spectroscopically. These forms could be selectively shifted in both directions by using near-IR excitations tuned at the frequency of the first NH stretching overtone. The observed isomerization proves the possibility of efficient vibrational relaxation to carry the energy deposited at the NH stretching coordinate into the reactive C-O torsional mode localized on the methoxy group four bonds away from the excited NH moiety.
