Summary Knowing the rate of evaporation from surface water resources such as channels and reservoirs is essential for precise management of the water balance. However, evaporation is difficult to measure experimentally over water surfaces and several techniques and models have been suggested and used in the past for its determination. In this research, evaporation from a small water reservoir in northern Israel was measured and estimated using several experimental techniques and models during the rainless summer. Evaporation was measured with an eddy covariance (EC) system consisting of a threedimensional sonic anemometer and a Krypton hygrometer. Measurements of net radiation, air temperature and humidity, and water temperature enabled estimation of other energy balance components. Several models and energy balance closure were evaluated. In addition, evaporation from a class-A pan was measured at the site. EC evaporation measurements for 21 days averaged 5.48 mm day À1 . Best model predictions were obtained with two combined flux-gradient and energy balance models (Penman-Monteith-Unsworth and Penman-Brutsaert), which with the water heat flux term, gave similar daily average evaporation rates, that were up to 3% smaller than the corresponding EC values. The ratio between daily pan and EC evaporation varied from 0.96 to 1.94. The bulk mass transfer coefficient was estimated using a model based on measurements of water surface temperature, evaporation rate and absolute humidity at 0.9 and 2.9 m above the water surface, and using two theoretical approaches. The bulk transfer coefficient was found to be strongly dependent on wind speed. For wind speeds below 5 m s À1 the estimated coefficient for unstable conditions was much larger than the one predicted for neutral conditions. ª
High‐frequency drip irrigation supplies water and nutrients at a rate that is close to plant uptake, thus enhancing growth and production. In light of water scarcity in arid regions, marginal water is increasingly considered as a resource for agricultural production. The objective of this study was to investigate the combined effects of pulsed irrigation and water salinity on the response of the soil–plant system. As a test crop, bell pepper (Capsicum annuum L.) was cultivated in a screenhouse and drip irrigated daily (D) and at high frequency (P) with saline (S) and fresh (F) water. Simultaneous monitoring of meteorological, physiological, soil physical, plant and soil chemical, and yield data was performed during the experiment. Most physiological parameters were negatively affected by high water salinity. No consistent effect of the irrigation frequency was found on the overall season, although pulsed irrigation led to higher plant weight and leaf area at the early stages of plant growth. The distinct patterns of soil water content for the two irrigation frequencies are presented. Salinity in the root zone was higher under pulsed irrigation, an observation that is supported by measured leaf chloride content and tensiometer readings indicating that the once daily application may have more efficiently removed salts from the top soil. Yield, fruit weight, and irrigation water use efficiency (IWUE) were highest under once daily irrigation with fresh water. High‐frequency irrigation led to higher Mn concentrations in leaves and fruits and increased concentrations of Cl, N, and P in leaves, confirming earlier conclusions on improved P mobilization and uptake under pulsed irrigation.
This study investigated the effects of radiation heat-load reduction by shading on the growth and development of citrus trees in a warm subtropical region. The experiment was conducted from mid-June until late October when daily maximal air temperature averaged 29.3 degrees C. Two-year-old de-fruited Murcott tangor (Citrus reticulata BlancoxCitrus sinensis (L.) Osb.) trees were grown under 30% or 60% shade tunnels, or 60% flat shade (providing midday shade only), using highly reflective aluminized nets. Non-shaded trees were used as the control. Shading reduced direct more than diffuse radiation. Daily radiation was reduced by 35% for the 30% Tunnel and 60% Flat treatments, and by 55% for the 60% Tunnel. Two days of intensive measurement showed that shading increased average sunlit leaf conductance by 44% and photosynthesis by 29%. Shading did not significantly influence root and stem dry weight growth, but it increased the increment in leaf dry weight during the three month period by an average of 28% relative to the control, while final tree height in the 30% Tunnel treatment exceeded the control by 35%. Shoot to root and shoot mass ratios increased and root mass ratio decreased due to shading because of the increase in leaf dry weight. Shading increased starch concentration in leaves while the shadiest treatment, 60% Tunnel, decreased starch concentration in the roots. Carbon isotope ratio (delta(13)C) of exposed leaves that developed under shading was significantly reduced by 1.9 per thousand in the 60% Tunnel, indicating that shading increased CO(2) concentrations at the chloroplasts (C(c)), as would be expected from increased conductance. Substomatal CO(2) concentrations, C(i), computed from leaf net CO(2) assimilation rate and conductance values, also indicate that shading increases internal CO(2) concentrations. Based on tree dry mass, tree height, and total carbohydrates fractions, the 30% Tunnel and the 60% Flat were the optimal shade treatments.
The study was conducted in order to determine whether water stress affects the accumulation of dry matter in tomato fruits similarly to salinity, and whether the increase in fruit dry matter content is solely a result of the decrease in water content. Although the rate of water transport to tomato fruits decreased throughout the entire season in saline water irrigated plants, accumulation rates of dry matter increased significantly. Phloem water transport contributed 80–85% of the total water transport in the control and water‐stressed plants, and over 90% under salinity. The concentration of organic compounds in the phloem sap was increased by 40% by salinity. The rate of ions transported via the xylem was also significantly increased by salinity, but their contribution to fruit osmotic adjustment was less. The rate of fruit transpiration was also markedly reduced by salinity. Water stress also decreased the rate of water transport to the tomato fruit and increased the rate of dry matter accumulation, but much less than salinity. The similar changes, 10–15%, indicate that the rise in dry matter accumulation was a result of the decrease in water transport. Other parameters such as fruit transpiration rates, phloem and xylem sap concentration, relative transport via phloem and xylem, solutes contributing to osmotic adjustment of fruits and leaves, were only slightly affected by water stress. The smaller response of these parameters to water stress as compared to salinity could not be attributed to milder stress intensity, as leaf water potential was found to be more negative. Measuring fruit growth of girdled trusses, in which phloem flow was inactive, and comparing it with ungirdled trusses validated the mechanistic model. The relative transport of girdled as compared to ungirdled fruits resembled the calculated values of xylem transport.
