A random-parameter model was used to relate total height to diameter at breast height (dbh) for cherrybark oak (Quercus pagoda Raf.). Data were obtained from 561 trees located in 50 stands occurring on bottomland hardwood sites in East Texas, near the western extent of the cherrybarkoak natural range. Mixed-model estimation techniques were used to fit fixed-effects parameters to the height-dbh relationship for cherrybark oak, with random-effects parameters representing sample stands from which tree data were obtained. The fixed-effect parameter estimates can be used topredict average cherrybark oak height for a given dbh in the region from which the data were obtained. Because random parameters associated with stands were used in the data-fitting process, the models can be calibrated to fit new stands by obtaining measurements to fit appropriate randomparameters for that stand. This calibration improves height predictions for individual stands while requiring less data than would the development of a completely new height prediction model for that stand. South. J. Appl. Three measurement cycles were completed on an extensive network of loblolly (Pinus taeda L.) pine and slash (Pinus elliottii Engelm.) pine plots in industrial plantations throughout East Texas in 1984, 1987, and 1990. Because the incidence of fusiform rust caused by Cronartium quercuum [Berk.] Miyabe ex Shirai f. sp. fusiforme had been recorded at each measurement, it is possible to characterize the temporal and geographic distribution of fusiform rust among these industrial pine plantations in East Texas. Average rust incidence for each species by two year age classes is presented. For loblolly pine, there is no apparent change in overall average incidence between 1987 and 1990, whereas for slash pine, there is an apparent overall average decline of about 7-8 percentage points. For some slash pine age classes, the incidence decline is 20-30 percentage points. This study attempts to characterize the Native American forest landowners in a three-county area of southeastern Oklahoma through a mail-out landowner survey. The total forestland owned by the survey respondents totaled to 12,211 ac with a mean of 140 ac. However, 56% of the respondents own less than 80 ac. More than one-half of the Native American respondents live on or adjacent to their forestland and only 17% are absentee landowners. Almost 60% of the landowners indicated personal reasons as their primary reason for owning their forestland followed by 19% for economic uses and 17% for recreational uses. Over one-half of these landowners indicated they have harvested their forest sometime in the past. Of the 45% that have not harvested their forest in the past, 31% indicated that either stumpage prices were too low or that their trees were not mature yet. Although most Native American forest landowners are involved in managing their forestland, lack of knowledge on forest management and harvesting strategies is an impediment to more effective, active management.
