Abstract-A planar antenna is introduced that works as a portable system for X-band satellite communications. This antenna is low-profile and modular with dimensions of cm. It is composed of a square array of 144 printed circuit elements that cover a wide bandwidth (14.7%) for transmission and reception along with dual and interchangeable circular polarization. A radiation efficiency above 50% is achieved by a low-loss stripline feeding network. This printed antenna has a 3 dB beamwidth of 5 , a maximum gain of 26 dBi and an axial ratio under 1.9 dB over the entire frequency band. The complete design of the antenna is shown, and the measurements are compared with simulations to reveal very good agreement.
Abstract-An antenna which has been conceived as a portable system for satellite communications based on the recommendations ITU-R S.580-6 [1] and ITU-R S.465-5 [2] for small antennas, i.e., with a diameter lower than 50 wavelengths, is introduced. It is a planar and a compact structure with a size of 40x40x2 cm. The antenna is formed by an array of 256 printed elements covering a large bandwidth (14.7%) at X-Band with a VSWR of 1.4:1. The specification includes transmission (Tx) and reception (Rx) bands simultaneously. The printed antenna has a radiation pattern with a 3dB beamwidth of 5º, over a 31dBi gain, and a dual and an interchangeable circular polarization.
An antenna which has been conceived as a portable system for satellite communications is introduced. It is a planar and a compact structure with a size of 40x40x2.5cm. The antenna is formed by a square array of 256 printed elements covering a large bandwidth (14.7%) at X-Band with a 1.4:1 VSWR, including the transmission (Tx) and the reception (Rx) bands simultaneously. The printed antenna has a radiation pattern with a 3dB beamwidth of 5º, over 31dBi directivity, a dual and an interchangeable circular polarization and a feeding network with total losses about 0.8dB. The complete design of the antenna is shown in this work, besides measurements of the radiation capabilities of the radiating element, the unit cell and the behavior of some components of the feeding network.
Abstract-A novel formulation for the surface impedance characterization is introduced for the canonical problem of surface fields on a perfect electric conductor (PEC) circular cylinder with a dielectric coating due to a electric current source using the Uniform Theory of Diffraction (UTD) with an Impedance Boundary Condition (IBC). The approach is based on a TE/TM assumption of the surface fields from the original problem. Where this surface impedance fails, an optimization is performed to minimize the error in the SD Green's function between the original problem and the equivalent one with the IBC. This new approach requires small changes in the available UTD based solution with IBC to include the geodesic ray angle and length dependence in the surface impedance formulas. This asymptotic method, accurate for large separations between source and observer points, in combination with spectral domain (SD) Green's functions for multidielectric coatings leads to a new hybrid SD-UTD with IBC to calculate mutual coupling among microstrip patches on a multilayer dielectric-coated PEC circular cylinder. Results are compared with the eigenfunction solution in SD, where a very good agreement is met.
