2002 ResumoO Plantago major é uma planta herbácea conhecida como transagem que ocorre espontaneamente nas regiões de clima temperado ou subtropical, sendo facilmente cultivada no Brasil. Popularmente é utilizada no tratamento de inflamações de boca e garganta, infecções intestinais e como agente antibacteriano. O infuso das folhas é usado como gargarejo no combate às inflamações da boca, garganta, gengivas sangrentas e parotidites. O estudo microbiológico para a avaliação da atividade do extrato hidro-alcoólico foi realizado pelo método de difusão em meio sólido, frente a doze isolados clínicos de Staphylococcus aureus, obtidos de feridas abertas da pele, secreções vaginais e da orofaringe. O extrato foi padronizado obtendo-se uma solução de concentração igual à 193,0 mg/ml. Os microrganismos foram identificados através de provas bioquí-micas específicas e suas culturas foram mantidas em meio sóli-do Mueller-Hinton. A ciprofloxacina foi utilizada como padrão antibacteriano na concentração de 10,0 mg/ml. Os microrganismos mostraram-se sensíveis ao extrato hidro-alcoólico, apresentando halos de inibição entre 10,0 e 13,0 mm e para o padrão ciprofloxacina entre 10,0 e 15,0 mm. Baseados nos estudos acima descritos o trabalho continuará com a determinação da Concentração Mínima Inibitória (CMI).O uso excessivo e inadequado de antibióticos tem contribuído para o aumento da resistência microbiana. Embora o desenvolvimento da resistência seja um fenômeno espontâneo, as drogas atuam como agentes seletores de amostras resistentes. Pacientes com o sistema imune comprometido contribuem para a disseminação destas linhagens 1,2 .A falência das terapias vigentes tem motivado a pesquisa de novas drogas para combate destes microrganismos resistentes. Com este objetivo, foi determinada a atividade antimicrobiana do extrato hidro-alcóolico do Plantago major sobre várias amostras de Staphylococcus aureus. A espécie Plantago major é utilizada popularmente para o tratamento caseiro de queimaduras, disenteria, diarréias e infecções da boca e garganta. Estas propriedades terapêuticas justificam a sua atividade antimicrobiana frente ao Staphylococcus aureus, microrganismo associado a graves infecções como: septicemia, bacteremia, endocardite e pneumonia 2 .Os valores dos halos de inibição medidos em milíme-tros para extrato hidro-alcoólico e ciprofloxacina sobre Staphylococcus aureus estão apresentados na tabela 1. As amostras 2, 3 e 9 apresentaram valores dos halos de inibição para o extrato hidro-alcoólico maiores que para o cloridrato de ciprofloxacina. As amostras 7 e 8 apresentaram-se sensíveis ao extrato hidroalcoólico, mas não foram inibidas pelo padrão de ciprofloxacina na concentração de 10 mg/ml.
