A search for the electroweak production of charginos and sleptons decaying into final states with two electrons or muons is presented. The analysis is based on 139 fb −1 of proton-proton collisions recorded by the ATLAS detector at the Large Hadron Collider at √ s = 13 TeV. Three R-parity-conserving scenarios where the lightest neutralino is the lightest supersymmetric particle are considered: the production of chargino pairs with decays via either W bosons or sleptons, and the direct production of slepton pairs. The analysis is optimised for the first of these scenarios, but the results are also interpreted in the others. No significant deviations from the Standard Model expectations are observed and limits at 95% confidence level are set on the masses of relevant supersymmetric particles in each of the scenarios. For a massless lightest neutralino, masses up to 420 GeV are excluded for the production of the lightest-chargino pairs assuming W-boson-mediated decays and up to 1 TeV for slepton-mediated decays, whereas for slepton-pair production masses up to 700 GeV are excluded assuming three generations of mass-degenerate sleptons. Recent advances in soft-collinear effective theory with Glauber gluons have led to the development of a new method that gives a unified description of inclusive hadron production in reactions with nucleons and heavy nuclei. We show how this approach, based on the generalization of the DGLAP evolution equations to include final-state medium-induced parton shower corrections for large Q 2 processes, can be combined with initial-state effects for applications to jet quenching phenomenology. We demonstrate that the traditional parton energy loss calculations can be regarded as a special soft-gluon emission limit of the general QCD evolution framework. We present phenomenological comparison of the SCETG-based results on the suppression of inclusive charged hadron and neutral pion production in √ sNN = 2.76 TeV lead-lead collisions at the Large Hadron Collider to experimental data. We also show theoretical predictions for the upcoming √ sNN 5.1 TeV Pb+Pb run at the LHC.
Study of the rare decays of B 0 s and B 0 mesons into muon pairs using data collected during 2015 and 2016 with the ATLAS detector The ATLAS Collaboration A study of the decays B 0 s → µ + µ − and B 0 → µ + µ − has been performed using 26.3 fb −1 of 13 TeV LHC proton-proton collision data collected with the ATLAS detector in 2015 and 2016. Since the detector resolution in µ + µ − invariant mass is comparable to the B 0 s -B 0 mass difference, a single fit determines the signal yields for both decay modes. This results in a measurement of the branching fraction B(B 0 s → µ + µ − ) = 3.2 +1.1 −1.0 × 10 −9 and an upper limit B(B 0 → µ + µ − ) < 4.3 × 10 −10 at 95% confidence level. The result is combined with the Run 1 ATLAS result, yielding B(B 0 s → µ + µ − ) = 2.8 +0.8 −0.7 ×10 −9 and B(B 0 → µ + µ − ) < 2.1×10 −10 at 95% confidence level. The combined result is consistent with the Standard Model prediction within 2.4 standard deviations in the B(B 0 → µ + µ − )-B(B 0 s → µ + µ − ) plane.
This paper presents results of searches for the electroweak production of supersymmetric particles in models with compressed mass spectra. The searches use 139 fb −1 of ffiffi ffi s p ¼ 13 TeV proton-proton collision data collected by the ATLAS experiment at the Large Hadron Collider. Events with missing transverse momentum and two same-flavor, oppositely charged, low-transverse-momentum leptons are selected, and are further categorized by the presence of hadronic activity from initial-state radiation or a topology compatible with vector-boson fusion processes. The data are found to be consistent with predictions from the Standard Model. The results are interpreted using simplified models of R-parity-conserving supersymmetry in which the lightest supersymmetric partner is a neutralino with a mass similar to the lightest chargino, the second-to-lightest neutralino, or the slepton. Lower limits on the masses of charginos in different simplified models range from 193 to 240 GeV for moderate mass splittings, and extend down to mass splittings of 1.5 to 2.4 GeV at the LEP chargino bounds (92.4 GeV). Similar lower limits on degenerate light-flavor sleptons extend up to masses of 251 GeV and down to mass splittings of 550 MeV. Constraints on vector-boson fusion production of electroweak SUSY states are also presented.
