Xylose‐rich polysaccharide fractions were isolated from cell walls of muskmelon (Cucumis melo L. cv. Cantaloup Charentais) stems. A xylan with a (1 → 4) linked backbone has been characterized as a component of these fractions. Two xylanases excreted by the fungus pathogen Colletotrichum lagenarium were able to degrade this substrate both after extraction and when it was included in the crude cell walls. The results suggest that the xylanases are involved in the parasitism of this pathogen.
scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
