The U,B,V light and color curves of SN 1979c in M100 from 1979 April 15 to August 4 are derived from coordinated visual, photographic, and photoelectric observations at the McDonald and U.S. Naval Observatories supplemented by Kaila's prediscovery observation and IUE data. The light curves, color curves, color-color evolution, and color excess of the supernova are discussed. The distance modulus of M100 derived by eight methods is ¡x 0 = 30.30 ± 0.15. The absolute magnitude (corrected for extinction) of SN 1979c at or near maximum on April 15 was M m°( R) = -19.45 with (B-Y9 M° ~ -0.13 and (U -B) m° ~ -0.97, making it the brightest type II supernova on record. The corrected color indices at maximum match those of a blackbody at T = 18,000 K, but do not fit the blackbodv curve at later times.

scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
