ARLIER work reported from tile Government 1,aboratories has shown that the breakdown and storage stability of GR-S masterbatched n-ith various oils has varied (4-6). The corrected dilute solution viscosity (DSV), which is related to the molecular weight of the polymer, of the original, dried masterbatches made from the same latex and different oils varied. The dilute solution viscosity of the polymer portion of the mastcibatch-observed DSV times 100 divided by 100 minus per cciit acetone extract content-was not constant. It was stated that these variations in the dilute solution viscopity of the original masterbatches were caused by differing degrees of heat softening of the polymer during drying. Therefore, det, ermining an exact relationship between brealcdomn and time was not feasible, because of the differences in breakdown during drying.
PROCEDUREThis paper deals with masterbatches made from thc same unaerated latex prepared according to the iron-pyrophosphate formula. The latex contained 1.25% phenyl-2-naphthylamine and was coagulated with 37.5 parts of various oils per 100 parts of polymer and then dried under carefully controlled conditions in a vacuum a t room temperature. The saturated or paraffinic components of the oils varied from about 6 to i 3 % . That the conditions were sufficiently controlled to prevent breakdown during drying is shown by the fact t,hat, the corrected dilute solution viscosity of all the masterbatches and the base polymer varied only from 3.24 to 3.37. As the viscosity of the base polymer had the low value, it is evident that these variations are within the experimental error of dilute solution viscosity and acetone extract determinations. (The arithmetical mean of 3.31 has been used here for the original dilute solution viscosity viilur.)The various samples were heat-aged at 140' F. in a forccd-A general type of exponential equation, V -A = typical of depletion reactions has been shown to apply to the breaLdown ( V = dilute solution viscosity; t = days) of polymer in oilpolymer masterbatches.
