Natural forest remnants have been set as seed production fields to supply seeds of native tree species for tropical forest restoration, but the effect of different forest types on seed production has not been accessed to date for palm species. In this work, we studied seed development, yield, and quality of two palm species in different tropical forest types in SE Brazil. Seed production of palmiteiro (Euterpe edulis) and queen-palm (Syagrus romanzoffiana), which are largely used in restoration efforts due to their importance for vertebrate frugivores, were studied in natural remnants of Atlantic Rainforest, Restinga Forest, Seasonally Dry Forest, and Cerrado Forest. We studied seed development, yield, size, and germination of seed lots produced in some of these forest types, including seeds harvested in 2008, 2009, and both years. Seed yield and quality, as well as seed dry mass in 2009, were higher for palmiteiro seeds produced in the Atlantic Rainforest, while queen-palm seeds produced at the Restinga Forest showed the higher mass and yield, but the lowest physiological potential. Consequently, these natural differences of seed yield and quality have to be taken into account for establishing standards for seed commercialization and analysis, seed pricing, and seedling production in forest nurseries.
Low temperatures at the initial stages of rice development prevent fast germination and seedling establishment and may cause significant productivity losses. In order to develop rice cultivars exhibiting cold tolerance, it is necessary to investigate genetic resources, providing basic knowledge to allow the introduction of genes involved in low temperature germination ability from accessions into elite cultivars. Japanese rice accessions were evaluated at the germination under two conditions: 13°C for 28 days (cold stress) and 28°C for seven days (optimal temperature). The traits studied were coleoptile and radicle length under optimal temperature, coleoptile and radicle length under cold and percentage of the reduction in coleptile and radicle length due to low temperature. Among the accessions studied, genetic variation for traits related to germination under low temperatures was observed and accessions exhibiting adequate performance for all investigated traits were identified. The use of multivariate analysis allowed the identification of the genotypes displaying cold tolerance by smaller reductions in coleoptile and radicle lenght in the presence of cold and high vigour, by higher coleoptile and radicle growth under cold.
The inadvertent inclusion of weevil-infested seeds when evaluating seed predation by vertebrates, and particularly rodents, may lead to an overestimation of predation rates, thereby confusing the roles of rodents and invertebrates as ecological filters. A study of weevils, rodents and Syagrus romanzoffiana palm seeds indicates the usefulness of X-rays to improve evaluation of invertebrate seed predation.Abstract in Portuguese is available at http://www.blackwell-synergy.com/loi/btp.
Palavras-chave: temperatura, luz, dormência, emergência, biologia.ABSTRACT -Understanding basic information on weed biology related to plant emergence fluxes, seed dormancy causes and maximum depth for emergence may significantly contribute to creating rational strategies for weed management in agriculture. Thus, this work was developed to evaluate seed germination and seedling emergence of small aerial seeds of Bengal dayflower (Commelina benghalensis).Seeds were submitted to dormancy overcoming in sulfuric acid (periods of 1, 2, 3, 5 and 5 minutes) under different conditions of temperature (mean temperatures of 16.1; 18.6; 20.6; 23.1; 25.0; 26.9; 29.2; 31.1 and 33.6 o C), light (with or without), and seeding depth in the substrate (0, 5, 10, 20, 40 and 80 mm). The optimal temperature for Bengal dayflower germination was 25 o C. Light effects were not observed on seed germination. Positive consequences of seed treatment with sulfuric acid were not identified, considering different periods of exposure; indicating that Bengal dayflower seeds do not have tegument water impermeability. Seedling emergence is negative and linearly influenced by seeding depth in the substrate. Seedling emergence was not observed when seeds were 80 mm depth placed. Sand substrate favored seedling emergence.
Dormancy acts in mimetic-seeded species as an exaptation to reduce seed deterioration, allowing an increase in their effective dispersal period and mitigating the losses incurred by low removal rates by naïve avian frugivores.
SEEDS PREX-TREATED WITH SULFURIC ACIDABSTRACT: This work was carried out to evaluate the effect of sulfuric acid pre-treatment on the germination percentage of Panicum maximum Jacq. seeds, in laboratory conditions. Recently harvested seeds, of five varieties, pre-treated or not with sulfuric acid, were tested periodically from August 1991 to April 1993. The statistical analysis of the collected data showed that the pre-treatment did not contribute to improve the germination of the seeds, since the beginning until the end of the storage period.
