Background: Improvement in diagnostic and therapeutic services has further increased the hazards in healthcare facilities, particularly the chemical hazard. Therefore, the need for more focus on chemical hazard exposure among healthcare workers. This study aimed to assess the perception of healthcare workers about chemical hazards associated with their job and the pattern of adopted preventive measures. Methods: A descriptive cross-sectional study was employed. One hundred and seven healthcare workers were enrolled in the study. The sample size was proportionally allocated to various departments that provide care directly to patients. Data on workers’ perceptions about chemical hazard exposure and utilization of preventive measures were obtained using self-administered questionnaire. Results: Majority of the respondents had high level of awareness (86.0%) and knowledge (81.3%) of chemical hazards. About one-fifth, 24 (22.4%), had experienced inadvertent exposure to chemical hazards. Gender, knowledge, and perception of chemical hazards had statistically significant associations with the use of personal protective equipment (PPE). Females are more likely to use PPE than male (odds ratio=5.1, p=0.008) and respondents with good perception of chemical hazard exposure are more likely to use PPE relative to respondents with poor perception (odds ratio=11.8, p=0.018). Standard operating procedures were available to less than half of the respondents, 52 (48.6%).Conclusions: There is a need for continuous strengthening of available safety measures to further reduce incidences of inadvertent chemical hazard exposure. The hospital management should ensure availability of standard operating procedures at all service locations.
Depression is a mood disorder that is characterized by major symptoms low mood, loss of interest in pleasurable activities and reduced energy level (World Health Organization, 2017). Hearing impairment can be a precipitating and perpetuation factor for Depression because it can affect social, family, and occupational relationship. The diminished ability to hear and to communicate is frustrating however the strong association between hearing impairment and social decline adds further to the burden on individuals who are hearing impaired (Appollonio, Carabellese, Frattola, Trabuc-chi, 1996). An Examination Survey of Hearing Impairment Associated With Depression in US Adults between 2005-2010 by Li, Zhang, Hoffman Cotch, Themann and Wilson (2014) found that the prevalence of moderate to severe depression (PHQ-9 score, ≥10) was 4.9% for individuals reporting excellent hearing, 7.1% for those with good hearing, and 11.4% for participants who reported a little trouble or greater hearing impairment.
Adolescence is a transitional period from the age of 10 to 19 years, when young people undergo physical, biological, psychological, cognitive, social and economic changes. Adolescence could be a challenging period for people. Adolescents with deafness face greater challenges as their communication skills and access to information relevant to their social life is limited. This study is a cross-sectional school-based one conducted among 105 adolescent students with deafness at Osun State Secondary School for Persons with Special Needs, Osogbo, Nigeria. Otoscopy was performed on all the participants to check for those with cerumen impaction and other middle ear pathologies. Pure Tone Audiometry was done by a certified Audiologist to determine the hearing thresholds of all the participants. General Health Questionnaire (GHQ 12) was used to determine the prevalence of psychiatric morbidity among the participants. The majority of the participants were late adolescents 96.2% (15-19 years), with a mean age of 17.45 years (SD = 1.50).There were 60 male and 45 female adolescent students with deafness that participated in the study .76.2 % were normal (negative psychiatric morbidity) while almost a quarter (23.8%) of the respondents had positive psychiatric morbidity. Adolescent student with deafness are at risk of psychiatric morbidity. Prompt provision of effective communication within the family and societal support will go a long way to preventing many of these problems.
Education is regarded globally as a potent instrument for introducing and supporting social change in human societies, as well as shaping its destiny. Apart from serving as a vehicle for enhancing upward social and economic mobility, education is regarded as a key to social reconstruction (Schiefelbein and McGinn, 2017). Education imparts knowledge, teaches skills, and instills attitudes to the recipients. Imparting knowledge means putting across facts, current thinking, theories, principles or laws; teaching skills, impart practical skills, comprehension and ability to see implications or solve problems; instilling attitudes include inculcating tolerance, open-mindedness, scientific detachment and healthy skepticism (Bamber, 2016). According to Jose, et al., (2017), education is important for social integration, the performance of productive tasks, and for effecting national development. Education brings liberation from the shackles of fear, prejudice, ignorance, and superstition. It helps to develop a free, independent and responsible citizenry, changes knowledge, attitude, skills, and
Introduction Psychiatric morbidity among university students especially health-related disciplines is vital because of its negative impact on their capacity to study. The study assessed the prevalence and factors associated with psychiatric morbidity among students
