A control device for point-on-wave closing or autoreclosing of shunt reactor compensated transmission lines for reduction of closing overvoltages is presented. The device is the first of its kind. It was put into field service successfully more than a year ago. Development aspects and basic investigations on the relevant transient switching phenomena are presented. The algorithm employed works independently of the shape of the voltage signal to be synchronized on by means of pattern recognition. Peculiarities of the hardware are high redundancy and a system to bypass the controller at any malfunction of the electronic circuits. The efficiency of the controller was verified by a combination of transient network analyser tests and EMTP simulations showing the ability of the device to suppress overvoltages. This procedure is generally recommended for future application o f control devices as a type test procedure.
This paper describes the study made to assess the electrical stresses imposed on line circuit breakers of a new SOOkV, AC expansion of the FURNAS transmission system, to be possibly installed in the Brazilian central region. The study has considered three configurations of the transmission lines, two of which assuming the use of compact towers. In one of these two cases the lines would have high surge-impedance loading. Digital simulations have been made with the aid of the Alternative Transients Program (ATP) to calculate the switching transients appearing as a result of line energization and reclosing, clearing of terminal and short-line faults, no-load line opening in normal and faulted conditions, and out-of phase switching. Four alternatives have been considered for the limitation of overvoltages on closing, assuming either the sole use of surge arresters on each line end or the use, in addition to the arresters, of pre-insertion resistors, synchronizers or time relays to provide a staggered closing of the breaker poles. The stresses obtained were compared with those applied by the standard IEC tests or with the maximum admissible levels usually considered by the utility for its transmission branches at the planning stage.
This article reports the results of a preliminary research work related to the rheological study of aqueous suspensions prepared from an industrial solid waste (ceramic shell) from the process of lost-wax casting. The results showed that the residue analyzed has a strong refractory character since it contains mostly mullite, zirconium silicate and quartz. The ceramic suspensions obtained, containing 70% (~ 23% vol.) residue, 5-7% of kaolin and 1.0-1.5% dispersant, showed a rheological behavior suitable for impregnation of polymeric foams for the production of filters for metal casting by the replication method.
