Sufficient floor space is a fundamental precondition for poultry to perform normal behavioural patterns. To calculate and determine stocking densities, it is essential to know the absolute minimum surface area required by any given animal (body space). Additional space is required for characteristic behaviours (behavioural space) and for adequate inter-individual distances, group sizes and room to perform social interactions have to be taken into account. To calculate body space, planimetric measurements were carried out by the colour contrast method "KobaPlan" in various poultry species in standing and sitting positions and at a number of different ages. They included laying hens (Lohmann brown (LB), Lohmann selected Leghorn (LSL)), broiler breeders (Ross, both genders), broiler chickens (Ross 308, both genders), turkeys (BUT 6, males), Peking ducks (Cherry Valley, both genders) and Muscovy ducks (Canedins R51, males). Depending on live weight, age, plumage condition and body position, LB hens occupied an average area between 401 cm(2) and 542 cm(2), LSL hens between 353 cm(2) and 445 cm(2), broiler breeder females between 440 cm(2) and 537 cm(2), broiler breeder males 623 cm(2) up to 945 cm(2), broiler chickens up to 434 cm(2), male fattening turkeys up to 1808 cm(2), Muscovy drakes up to 873 cm(2) and Peking ducks up to 627 cm(2). The values can be regarded as necessary minimum spatial requirements for the measured poultry species and genotype. The current method offers the potential to record the area occupied by animals exhibiting species-specific behavioural patterns.
To evaluate pain responses to intratesticular and subscrotal injection of three local anaesthetics and their efficacy during castration a randomized controlled study was conducted. In groups of 20 piglets, procaine (2%), lidocaine (2%), or mepivacaine (2%) were administered subscrotal and intratesticularly in two different dosages: 0.5 mL of the original substances or the maximum recommended dosage according to body weight diluted with isotonic saline to a volume of 0.3 mL per each injection site. Two placebo groups received the equivalent volume of isotonic saline. A control group was injected intramuscularly with 0.5 mL isotonic saline for injection pain comparison. Electroencephalographic changes, respiratory rate, heart rate and its variability, blood pressure, and nocifensive movements were assessed in superficial isoflurane anaesthesia. While EEG-changes and linear measures of heart rate variability did not appear conclusive, the low frequency/high frequency (LF/HF) ratio corresponded best with the other pain indicators recorded. The injection of 0.3 mL diluted local anaesthetic per injection site elicited significant fewer signs of pain compared to intramuscular injection of saline. However, pain reduction, but not complete pain elimination, during castration could only be achieved with 0.5 mL of the 2% local anaesthetics per injection site, whereby lidocaine and mepivacaine were the most effective.

Laying hens in two aviary flocks of 1250 females and 12 males were investigated to determine if hens used the same roosting site more often than expected by chance and whether hens that roost next to each other for two consecutive nights (close groups) had fewer agonistic interactions than hens roosting far away from each other (distant groups) when put into a new environment in groups of 4 birds. 2. Hens showed a significant preference for using the same roosting site on consecutive nights. There was no difference between close groups and distant groups in agonistic interactions. However, in close but not distant groups, a low or high level of interaction on day 1 predicted a low or high level on day 2 that might reflect established relationships in the close groups. 3. It was concluded that hens prefer the same roosting site in the short term but further research is needed to investigate whether hens roosting next to each other recognise roosting partners or not.

Auf Basis einer Stichprobe von 692 Kinofilmen, die zwischen 2001 und 2005 formal für eine Nominierung in Frage kamen, können insbesondere Kritiken und das Produktionsbudget als Treiber einer Nominierung identifiziert werden. Als nachteilig erweist sich dagegen ein Kinostart lange vor dem Nominierungszeitpunkt. Zudem können wir zeigen, dass der Erfolg an der Kinokasse positiv auf die Nominierung wirkt.
