O café está presente na economia do estado do Espírito Santo desde o início do século XIX. Sua produção baseia-se sobretudo em pequenas propriedades familiares, distribuídas em regiões com características socioeconômicas e edafoclimáticas heterogêneas. Logo, um sistema de gestão acurado é importante para a sustentabilidade da atividade. Este trabalho identifica o grau de gestão das empresas cafeeiras no Estado e os indicadores que contribuem com maior peso para os níveis observados, visando orientar atividades que promovam a sustentabilidade e o desenvolvimento regional. O estudo baseia-se no Método de Identificação do Grau de Gestão – MIGG, estatísticas descritivas e análise de componentes principais. Os resultados indicam que sistemas de gestão mais apurados e homogêneos estão associados às lavouras de Conilon/robusta, sobretudo no “Litoral Norte Espírito-santense”, enquanto os mais deficientes e mais heterogêneos são encontrados nas lavouras de Arábica, em especial no “Sul Espírito-santense”. O potencial de evolução da gestão interna é grande em todas as regiões cafeeiras do Estado, independentemente do tipo de café e do tamanho da propiedade.
