Establishing the mechanisms by which the solar wind enters Earth's magnetosphere is one of the biggest goals of magnetospheric physics, as it forms the basis of space weather phenomena such as magnetic storms and aurorae. It is generally believed that magnetic reconnection is the dominant process, especially during southward solar-wind magnetic field conditions when the solar-wind and geomagnetic fields are antiparallel at the low-latitude magnetopause. But the plasma content in the outer magnetosphere increases during northward solar-wind magnetic field conditions, contrary to expectation if reconnection is dominant. Here we show that during northward solar-wind magnetic field conditions-in the absence of active reconnection at low latitudes-there is a solar-wind transport mechanism associated with the nonlinear phase of the Kelvin-Helmholtz instability. This can supply plasma sources for various space weather phenomena.
Abstract. Thirty rapid crossings of the magnetotail current sheet by the Cluster spacecraft during July-October 2001 at a geocentric distance of 19 R E are examined in detail to address the structure of the current sheet. We use four-point magnetic field measurements to estimate electric current density; the current sheet spatial scale is estimated by integration of the translation velocity calculated from the magnetic field temporal and spatial derivatives. The local normalrelated coordinate system for each case is defined by the combining Minimum Variance Analysis (MVA) and the curlometer technique. Numerical parameters characterizing the plasma sheet conditions for these crossings are provided to facilitate future comparisons with theoretical models. Three types of current sheet distributions are distinguished: centerpeaked (type I), bifurcated (type II) and asymmetric (type III) sheets. Comparison to plasma parameter distributions show that practically all cases display non-Harris-type behavior, i.e. interior current peaks are embedded into a thicker plasma sheet. The asymmetric sheets with an off-equatorial current density peak most likely have a transient nature. The ion contribution to the electric current rarely agrees with the current computed using the curlometer technique, indicating that either the electron contribution to the current is strong and variable, or the current density is spatially or temporally structured.
[1] A new method is described which calculates the velocity of observed, quasi-stationary structures at every moment in time from multi-point magnetic field measurements. Once the magnetic gradient tensor G = r B and the time variation of the magnetic field have been estimated at every moment, the velocity can then be determined, in principle, as a function of time. One striking property of this method is that we can calculate the velocity of structures for any dimensionality: for three-dimensional structures, all three components of the velocity vector can be calculated directly; for two-dimensional (or onedimensional) structures, we can calculate the velocity along two (or one) directions. The advantage of this method is that the velocity is determined instantaneously, point by point through any structure, and so we can see the time variation of the velocity as the spacecraft traverse the structure. In this paper, the feasibility of the method is tested by calculating the motion velocity of a three-dimensional, near cusp structure and a two-dimensional magnetotail current sheet. The results for one-dimensional structures in the magnetopause and cusp boundaries are compared to calculations for the standard techniques for analyzing discontinuities. Citation:
