The vapour-phase decomposition of hydrogen peroxide has been studied in a flow system on a wide range of metallic oxide surfaces in the range 38-184°C using high-purity nitrogen as the carrier gas and H202 partial pressures up to 1 mm. Oxide surfaces were held on vacuum-flashed metal films, Specpure metal slips, or as compressed slips of the bulk oxide. The problem of adequately defining catalyst activity is discussed and the importance of the steady decomposition efficiency D and temperature coefficient EA stressed. These values are used in formulating the activity series, which in order of decreasing efficiency is :This order leads to an oxide classification on the basis of defect type. Kinetic studies of decomposition on Fe2O3, COO and NiO suggest the relation :A mechanism is suggested in which catalysis depends on cyclic transfer of electrons between oxide surface and the H 2 0 2 . the the The few investigations of the heterogeneous catalysis of hydrogen peroxide in the vapour phase have been conducted with relatively inert surfaces such as glass and aluminium, mainly in static systems.192 No detailed study of surfaces normally considered to be most active, such as silver or manganese dioxide, has yet been reported and no conclusions have been drawn as to the connection between the chemical nature of a catalyst and its activity.Kinetic studies2 which have generally been made at low pressures have shown first order rate dependence on H202 concentrations. This could indicate a decomposition mechanism in which the rate is controlled by diffusion either in the gas phase or at a phase boundary-rather than adsorption. However, diffusion appears to be ruled out by the high and variable activation energies found by Gigukre 1 and also by the sensitivity of catalyst activity to minor changes in surface treatment. It seemed that a study of H202 catalysis by a wide range of surfaces, including very active ones, would yield results of interest in this special field and also in the wider context of the general mechanism of oxide catalysis.
