A berinjela (Solanum melongena L.) é uma solanácea originária de regiões tropicais do Oriente, sendo cultivada há muitos séculos por chineses e árabes. Embora a área plantada no Brasil perfaça um pouco mais de 1.500 ha, está havendo um crescente aumento no consumo desta hortaliça, motivada pela procura por parte dos consumidores de produtos mais saudáveis e com propriedades medicinais. Neste aspecto, a berinjela se destaca pela sua propriedade redutora do nível de colesterol (Filgueira, 2000).O mercado consumidor brasileiro tem se tornado cada vez mais exigente quanto à qualidade do produto e preço, o que tem levado os produtores de olerícolas à utilização de cultivares e híbridos de alta produtividade e qualidade de frutos. A berinjela apresenta oferta e preço relativamente estável ao longo do ano, mesmo sendo uma espé-cie termófila, que necessita alta temperatura para o seu desenvolvimento
