Water transport is one of the most important part of the transport infrastructure providing transport links of the subjects of the Russian Federation and export-import shipments and the major factor of the sustainable development of the economy. The significant role of the river transport and sea transport in the transport services is remaining, first of all, in the regions of the Far North, Siberia and the Far East. In this study the authors suggest the structure, content and functional capabilities of the thematic section "Water Transport" within the framework of the developing geoinformation resource "Transport System of Russia". The conceptual model of the developed geoinformation resource assumes implementation in the form of separate web applications linked by web interface. First web application is the static subsystem prepared as a set of thematic maps with additional information including text, pictures, graphics. Second application is interactive subsystem realized as a cartographic application integrated into the structure of geoinformation resource. The open statistical data published on the Internet portal of the Federal Agency for Marine and River Transport was analyzed. Significant part of information was formalized for subsequent integration into a spatial database. The created set of spatial data "Water Transport of the Russian Federation" is part of the general database "Transport System of the Russian Federation" and contains geoinformation layers and database tables interconnected by logical links. The final implementation of the resource will allow analyzing information on the status and dynamics of water transport as a part of transport infrastructure.
