Background and Aim: One of the most important aspects of marital life is the satisfaction of couples. Marital satisfaction is a positive and enjoyable attitude that the husband and wife have in different aspects of marital relations such as relationships, personality issues, conflict resolution, financial issues, sexual relations, and children. Deafness affects the relationship between couples and may decrease emotional and physical intimacy. Therefore, loss of hearing has negative consequences for marital satisfaction. This study aimed to investigate marital satisfaction in deaf couples. Recent Findings: A review of studies between 1978 and 2017 has shown that marital satisfaction in couples who are both deaf are higher than couples who one of the couples is deaf. Conclusion: Studies show that deaf- hearing marriage leads to less life satisfaction than deaf-deaf or hearing hearing marriage. Lack of national studies in this field is obvious. It seems that teaching the couples life skills by can be helpful. Keywords: Deaf; couple; marital satisfaction
Given that marital satisfaction and the factors influencing it are of high importance among deaf women, the present study aimed to examine the impact of life skills training on the marital satisfaction of deaf women in the Iranian Deaf Association (IDA). A multiple-baseline, single-case experimental design was conducted. The statistical population consisted of all deaf women in the IDA during 2014-2015. A total of 3 deaf women who met the inclusion criteria were selected using a purposeful sampling method. They participated in a 9-session life skills training program for 45 minutes a week. The instrument used in the present study was the 47-item version of the ENRICH Marital Satisfaction Scale (EMS). The data from repeated measures was processed using the trend comparison charts, and the clinical significance of the data was determined using the recovery rate formula. The results from the trend comparison charts, recovery rate formula, and visual analysis showed that the life skills training improved the marital satisfaction of the samples. According to the study findings, it can be concluded that life skills training improves the marital satisfaction among deaf women. Therefore, the method used in the present study can be recognized as an appropriate method in psycho-educational interventions for strengthening family foundation and improving marriage durability of deaf couples at the beginning of marriage.
Objective: Many deaf adolescents tend to show more aggression, due to their less social and emotional skills. This also affects their self-evaluation and self-esteem. Life skills are related to the personal, intellectual, emotional, and physical development of an individual. The present study was done to examine the effectiveness of a life skills training program on improvement of the self-esteem and aggression control of deaf adolescents girls. Methods: This quasi-experimental study with a pre-test and post-test design using a control group Was done on 34 female deaf adolescents who were studying in first, second, and third grade of high school in Nezam Mafi High School, Tehran, Iran. Participants were selected using a purposive convenience sampling method and were randomly divided into two groups (experimental and control groups). The Coopersmith Self-Esteem Inventory (SEI) and the Buss-Perry Aggression Questionnaire (AQ) were used to collect data. The life skills training program was delivered to the experimental group in eight 60-min sessions. Results: The results showed that the eight sessions of life skills training program significantly increased self-esteem (P<0.001) and decreased aggression of the experimental group of deaf adolescents girls (P<0.001) while there was no change in the control group. Conclusion: According to the results, it can be concluded that life skills training should be considered as a method for improving the mental status of deaf adolescent girls. Since there may be less social experiences in deaf adolescents, a training program may help them to achieve more self-esteem skills and be more successful in social communications.
