Cassava starch extract pulp is an important unconventional livestock feed rich in energy but rarely used as livestock feed due to anti-nutritional factor and lack of nutrient composition. Cassava starch extract pulp was detoxified by sun drying for two week due to high sun intensity and environmental temperature. Proximate and phytochemical composition, gross energy and cyanide contentof the pulp were determined using appropriate standard methods. The results of the analysis shows that the percentage moisture, crude protein, crude fibre, ether extract, ash, dry matter and gross energy of the pulp are 5.10%, 1.30%, 3.15%, 0.71%, 4.40%, 94.90% and 4328.72kcal/kg while its cyanide content were 37.58mg/kg. The results revealed that the pulp is very rich in energy. The nutritional content of the pulp were very low, however the ranges of values obtained are below the values that can adversely affected the nutritive value or cause any toxic effects in animal. Based on the results of the study, the pulp should be supplemented with other feed ingredients such as (methionine) which are the limited amino acid and those nutrients whose nutrients are very high.
African yam bean seed is one of the underutilized legumes and a prospective feed ingredient in poultry diet. This study was carried out to examine carcass characteristics and internal organs of broiler starter fed partial replacement of toasted African yam bean seed meal supplemented with multi-enzyme (TAYBSM+E). There were five treatments: treatment one (T1) served as control without TAYBSM+E while T2, T3, T4 and T5 contained 20%, 40%, 60% and 80% TAYBSM+E, respectively and supplied experimental broiler birds for four weeks. Each treatment was randomly assigned to one of the five experimental diets in a completely randomized designed. Two hundred birds were allotted to five treatments replicated four times with 10 birds per replicate. At four weeks of age, experimental birds were starved for 12 hours; one bird was sacrificed per replicate (four per treatments), defeathered and cut into different parts. Carcass cuts and vital organs were carefully collected and weighed with sensitive scale. All parameters in the carcass cuts and internal organs weight examined were not statistically (P>0.05) influenced except intestine, lungs and thigh that significantly (P<0.05) different. It is concluded that toasted African yam bean seed meal supplemented with multi-enzyme is a good source of protein that can be used in broiler feeds safely up to 80% inclusion level to give satisfactory results.
This study was carried out to examine the effect of sun dried cassava peels meal on haematological and blood serum indices of broiler starter chicks. Atotal of 150 unsexed, day old broiler chickens (Arbor acre) were randomly allotted into 5 dietary treatments (T1, T2, T3, T4 and T5) containing 0, 10, 20, 30 and 40% sun dried cassava peal meal (SDCPM), respectively as replacement for wheat bran. Each treatment consisted of 3 replicates of 10 birds each in a Completely Randomized Designed (CRD). At four (4) weeks of age, experimental birds were starved overnight, and blood was harvested for hematological and serum assays. The results showed no significant difference (p>0.05) among parameters examined except globulin and albumin globulin ratio that were significantly (p<0.0) different. Globulin ranged between 5.43g/dl (T1, 0%) to 7.04g/dl (T5, 40%). Albumin globulin ratio ranged from 0.50in T4 and T5 to 0.63 in T2. It could be concluded that SDCPM performed favourably with control at all levels of inclusions (10,20, 30 and 40%SDCPM), therefore, it could be used to replace wheat bran in the diet of broiler starter without any deleterious effect on health status of chickens.
