Abstract

The puepose of the present review article is to outline the development of vibrational spectroscopy and electronic spectroscopy in condensed phase for the last 30 years or so. Recent advances in far ultraviolet, near infrared, far infrared/terahertz/low frequency Raman, and Raman spectroscopy are reviewd. The feilds of Raman spectroscopy are so wide that in this article only surface enhanced Raman scattering and tip enhanced Raman scattering, and application of Raman spectroscopy to medical sciences are presented. It is of note that about 30 year ago far ultraviolet spectroscopy for condensed phase, terahertz spectroscopy and tip enhanced Raman scattering were in the stage of ``before dawn''. Application to basic science of near infrared spectroscopy was also not develped. In each session after the brief history of each spectroscopy, its characteristic and advantages are described. Then, examples of applications are introduced. Some emphasis is put on quantum chemical calculations and instruments which we newly developed. Finaly, future prospects of vibrational spectroscopy and electronic spectroscopy in condenseed phase is discussed.
