“…They usually require increased Lewis acidity at the zinc center brought about by electronegative substituents or weakly coordinating counterions. For example, the arene complexes Zn(SbF 6 ) 2 ·C 6 Me 6 and Zn(SbF 6 ) 2 ·C 6 HMe 5 were characterized using NMR spectroscopy in liquid SO 2 . The first crystallographically authenticated compound with intramolecular zinc arene interactions was the terphenylthiolate Zn(SC 6 H 3 -Mes 2 -2,6) 2 (Mes = 2,4,6-Me 3 C 6 H 2 ), and the crystal structure of a toluene adduct was finally reported for (C 6 F 5 ) 2 Zn·C 7 H 8 .…”

“…In contrast, although the Zn 2+ ion and many zinc(II) compounds are known for their Lewis acid behavior and readily bind polar molecules, well-characterized complexes of zinc coordinated to neutral CC π systems are remarkable for their scarcity. In early pioneering studies on the system Zn(SbF 6 ) 2 /arene in liquid SO 2 , Damude and Dean isolated solid 1:1 products of the composition Zn(SbF 6 ) 2 ·(arene) for electron-rich arenes (C 6 HMe 5 and C 6 Me 6 ); solution spectroscopic studies showed labile zinc−arene interactions which, in analogy to the known copper(I) and silver(I) 11 systems, were interpreted as localized bonding of the arene to the metal cation. Weak intramolecular interactions between Zn(II) centers and aryl substituents have been structurally identified, as in Power's thiolato complexes Zn(SC 6 H 3 -2,6-Ar 2 ) 2 (Ar = 2,4,6-R 3 C 6 H 2 , R = Me, Pr i ) 12 or in core-modified porphyrin complexes …”
