μ–τ interchange symmetry and lepton mixing

Abstract: We focus on the use of a µ-τ interchange symmetry to explain features of lepton mixing, especially maximal atmospheric neutrino mixing. We review two models which achieve this goal and are based on the seesaw mechanism and on the soft breaking of the family-lepton-number symmetries. We also note that that symmetry may be embedded in a generalized CP symmetry. We show that, in the context of some of our models, arguments of naturalness may be used for explaining the smallness of the mass ratio mµ/mτ .

“…However, this flavor symmetry leads to the prediction that θ 13 = 0 which has now been excluded at more than 5.2σ [41]. A way out was proposed [32][33][34] in terms of its complex (CP) extension (CP µτ ) with the postulate…”

“…This is what we aim to do in this paper by proposing a complex (CP) extension of µτ flavor antisymmetry CP µτ A and working out its various phenomenological implications. Complex extensions of µτ symmetry [32][33][34] and scaling symmetry [46][47][48] as well as their consequences have been worked out earlier. That is the direction of our thrust here for µτ antisymmetry.…”

“…The idea was first explored in the context of CP symmetry combined with µ − τ reflection symmetry, resulting in the atmospheric mixing angle θ 23 and the Dirac CP phase δ CP both being determined to be maximal, as discussed in [21][22][23][24][25][26][27]. More recently, the phenomenological consequences of imposing both an S 4 family symmetry and a generalised CP symmetry have been investigated in a model-independent way [28][29][30][31][32][33].…”
